A group of bipartisan leaders in Congress will award the Congressional Gold Medal to police officers who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6.
The ceremony will take place on Dec. 6.
What happened: Senior Hill leaders from both parties will present the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can award, to members of the U.S. Capitol Police and D.C. Metropolitan Police Department for their actions to defend the Capitol complex during the Jan. 6 attack, Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Wednesday.
The details: The ceremony is set for Dec. 6 in the Capitol Rotunda. Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy are all due to participate, according to her office.
McCarthy's presence will be especially interesting as he's faced strong public criticism from some officers after members of his conference minimized or denied the severity of the attack.
