CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia lifted a campuswide lockdown Monday hours after three students were killed and two injured in a shooting rampage on a charter bus that had returned from a field trip, authorities said.

Killed were D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler, all of whom played football at the Charlottesville school, university president Jim Ryan said.

"This is a sad, shocking and tragic day for our UVA community," Ryan said at a news briefing Monday, adding that authorities did not have a “full understanding” of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The suspected shooter, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., is a former UVA football player, though he didn't appear in any games. He was arrested just before 11 a.m. Monday in Henrico County, about 75 miles southeast of Charlottesville, Henrico Police said in a statement. Ryan said Jones, 22, is a student at the 22,000-student school. ...

A photo of Jones tweeted by UVA police also appears on virginiasports.com, where he was listed on the UVA football team roster in 2018. His profile says he was then a 5-foot-9, 195-pound first-year running back from Petersburg, Virginia, who did not appear in any games. It adds that he graduated from Petersburg High School after spending three years at Varina High School, where he was named Student of the Year as a freshman and sophomore, according to the profile.

Jones faces three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun to commit a felony, Longo said. He said Jones had come to the attention of his department in September after someone reported that Jones made a comment about a gun, but no one reported actually seeing a weapon.

Longo also said officials learned about a previous incident outside Charlottesville involving Jones and a weapons violation, but said it wasn't reported to the university as it should have been. ...

The former University of Virginia football player accused of shooting five of his former teammates, including three fatally, on a charter bus after returning from a class field trip Sunday night faced a prior hazing investigation, but the matter had been closed, according to UVA campus police.

Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr. – apprehended off-campus following a 12-hour manhunt and exhaustive, building-by-building search of the UVA grounds – also was facing a pending disciplinary matter after failing to report a prior February 2021 criminal matter involved a concealed weapon violation that occurred outside of Charlottesville as required of all students attending the D1 university.  ...

UVA running back Mike Hollins was shot while attempting to help his teammates.

Hollins was one of the several people shot last Sunday night on UVA’s campus after Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. allegedly opened fire on a bus returning from a play. ...

More details have emerged on the tragic situation, and Hollins was shot after he attempted to provide aid to his slain teammates, according to his mother.

“His classmates are grateful for him because they said he saved their lives. He was the first off the bus and told two of his classmates to run, and he went back. He said, ‘Mom, I went back. I needed to do something. I was going to beat on the windows because no one else was coming off the bus.’ He said, ‘I was going to beat on the windows. I was going to go on the bus and tell them to come on, get off,'” his mother Brenda told ESPN about her son’s actions.
