Russian court upholds WNBA star Brittney Griner's 9-year prison sentence

Updated on: October 25, 2022 / 10:05 AM / CBS/AP

A Russian court on Tuesday upheld American basketball star Brittney Griner's nine-year prison sentence for drug possession, rejecting her appeal in a session where she appeared via video call from a penal colony outside Moscow. Griner can still appeal to a higher court, but her lawyers have yet to confirm whether they will take the case further.

In the ruling, the court stated that the time Griner will have to serve in prison will be recalculated with her time in pre-trial detention taken into account. One day in pre-trial detention will be counted as 1.5 days in prison, so the basketball star will have to serve around eight years in prison.

The decision clears the way for the WNBA star to serve that sentence in a penal colony, unless the U.S. government negotiates a deal.

I really want to feel sorry for this woman. I really do.

She's not a child and knew the laws in Russia.

Besides all that, she basically spat on the US in the very recent past.

So as the saying goes, I'm all out of give a sh!ts.

She thought she could skirt Russian law by playing the BLM card and lost that bet.

What's more important to Biden? Freeing a basketball star from a Russian prison, or preventing you, your loved ones and billions around the world from a nuclear holocaust? Biden refuses to discuss preventing WWIII with Putin, but will happily talk to him about Griner.

I don't suppose her Russian team will be paying her $1 million per year salary to the prison canteen, though.

NBA player Kyrie "Flat Earth" Irving begs Biden "to bring our sister home." Just imagine a white athlete begging the president to bring home a white Russian prisoner stressing that they're white and deserve to be brought home over any other Americans of whatever color held in a Russian prison.
The racism in Irving's comment that somehow a black American in a foreign prison is far important than a non-black American is astounding. But nobody will say anything about it in the national media.

Well, in some places the race card isn't a 'get out of jail free' card. Nor the "Ima athlete" card...

If, instead, she'd been busy being an example of how to behave, a real role model, she might not be in this fix. Self inflicted wound...

But even a good bad example is worth something.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Brittney Griner Being Moved To Penal Colony Used For Exiling Prisoners
by Zach Dean
about an hour ago  updated 43 minutes ago

Brittney Griner, who has now been in a Russian jail for close to a year, is being transferred to a penal colony, her lawyers said Wednesday.

They don’t know where Griner will go, which is usually the case in these situations. And they said in a statement that that they expect to be notified through official mail, along with the U.S. Embassy, once Griner’s arrived.

That process can sometimes take up to two weeks.

Penal colonies are also known as ‘exile colonies,’ and are used for just that – cutting off prisoners from the outside world. They are usually some sort of settlement that is completely separate them from the general population, and can often be an island or distant colonial territory. ...

Just out of curiosity, anyone know what all this means in terms of her WNBA contract? Is she still being paid?

I would guess that she is in default.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

According to The Google, she's still getting paid.

The simple answer is that her bank account should be in decent shape. The WNBA announced in May that Griner would be paid her full salary while she remains in Russia, and the money would not count against the salary cap for the Phoenix Mercury.

Griner signed a three-year contract extension with the Phoenix Mercury for $664,544 in 2020, which will give her $221,450 for the 2021-2022 season and $227,900 for the 2022-2023 season.
