Popcorn Balls and Apples with razor blades ... 1980s classics that had cops X-raying children's Halloween candy. ... just another peek into the shaping of the Gen-X psyche ... whatever

Reports of razor blades and PCP in candy fueled parents’ Halloween fears

Editor's note: Take a look back at the archives of The Dallas Morning News.

For several years in the early 1980s, Halloween got a whole lot scarier. Parents in Dallas and across the country weren't looking out for ghosts or goblins — they were looking out for cyanide and razor blades hidden in Tootsie Rolls and Spree.

Their concern wasn't totally unfounded. In late September 1982, an unknown individual laced Tylenol pain relievers with potassium cyanide, resulting in the deaths of seven people in the Chicago area. Parents began to worry that candy could be tampered with in a similar way. Rumors and reports of painful foreign objects added to the anxiety.

Many cities across the country banned trick-or-treating in an attempt to protect children from potential injury. But in Dallas, police spokesman Ed Spencer told The News that he "didn't see how we could do that." Another spokesman, Bob Shaw, noted that "traditions die hard." ...

I remember those days.

I remember the Tylenol scare. Being in the Midwest, within distribution distance of Chicago, it freaked us out because we didn't know if it was done at the store or the factory, or how extensive it was.

All this talk of candy is getting to me. We don't hand out Halloween candy, but I'm going to buy something anyway, thanks to this discussion.

I remember those days.

And before the 80' was October 31, 1974 in Pasadena, Texas

Quote
PASADENA, TX — Urban legends abound warning of Halloween sweets tainted with pins, glass, razor blades, and even Ecstasy, but there’s one tale of weaponized candy handed out during the ghoulish holiday that’s actually based on frightening fact. The true-crime case of Ronald Clark O’Bryan, known as the “Candyman” and “The Man Who Killed Halloween,” forever changed the way many trick-or-treaters and their parents view the holiday — whether they realize it or not.

On October 31, 1974, O’Bryan and his family — wife Daynene; son Timothy, 8; and daughter Elizabeth, 5 — had dinner with Jim Bates, his wife, and their children. When they finished up, O’Bryan and his two kids joined Bates and his little boy on a hunt for candy.

At one point during the evening, the fathers and their children stopped at a home, but nobody answered and they left. O’Bryan then drifted behind the group, but he came running back a short time later waving five 22-inch Pixie Stix, straws packed with a powdered candy. According to O’Bryan, he had stumbled upon “some rich neighbors” who gave him the “expensive treats.”

"It was kind of a cold, and kind of a misty, damp night,” said Harold Nassif, a former Pasadena detective sergeant. "Since it had been raining, Mr. O'Bryan had a raincoat on. Unbeknownst to [anyone], he had the Pixie Stix shoved up the sleeves of his raincoat."

Just you and me it seems, but I loved these too... Spent 10 minutes cleaning them out of my teeth, but it was worth it. @Elderberry

You should try and get you some black licorice out of Holland... Salted. The very best. If you've got a Dutch community around there, it is worth seeking out.

Nooooo! The salt ruins the licorice. It’s nasty!  If you love licorice the Netherlands is the place to get it. They have so many different variations of it. Whenever I flew home from the Netherlands I always had a big bag of licorice.

With the exception of your disagreement wrt the salt, That's what I said @LilLamb   happy77

I have never been to the old country - All that wound up in me by osmosis through my Dutch family in Chicago, Wisconsin, and Michigan (and points between). I am 3rd gen American and half purebred Dutch (Freislander, or high country).

So I come by it naturally.

Me, too!

Mine as well. I mix them with candy corn.

As far as chocolate candy, I can't choose a favorite. I never met a chocolate candy bar I didn't like.

This is interesting, @roamer_1 . I guess I've never had "real" licorice. When I was a kid we had the licorice whips. And the black jelly beans are all mine, lol.

I may have to look on Amazon to see if I can order the real thing.

Depends upon the refinement of your tastes I reckon @berdie ... Kinda like beer - Good beer is wasted on me - Give me cheap crappy beer and I will be fine. I find no measurable difference in Pilsner beers... So a PBR or a Kokanee, or a Rainier is fine with me, and no need to spend any more. Though a dark ale is a different thing...

But if you have a taste for black licorice, yes, indeed, try a northern European source, and the Netherlands particularly.

This time of year exclusively... candy corn mixed with peanuts... A long tradition in my house, always put out in candy dishes all over the house.

As to the rest, tarty stuff like sweettarts or skittles... Jellys to a lesser degree... chocolate is fine. Nougat and nuts... But I am without a doubt a caramel guy.

Brach's Milkmaids or Royals are probably my all time favorite. I can eat em by the pound.
Candy corn....yummmmmm!  I love any of the things you mentioned...sadly sometimes I have a fear that a skittles or caramel will yank a filling out....old age sucks!
