SpinLaunch Successfully Slingshots Payloads from NASA, Airbus and Cornell University Into Space

SpinLaunch successfully completed the tenth flight test of its Suborbital Accelerator from Spaceport America, New Mexico. It launched and recovered payloads from NASA, Airbus, Cornell University and Outpost, providing critical data on the launch environment as well as payload integration process.

The company first accelerated the payloads up to 10,000G and were inspected post-spin before being subsequently integrated into the Flight Test Vehicle in preparation for Flight Test 10. SpinLaunch aims to place satellites into orbit and deliver payloads for spacefaring endeavors by 2026. Let’s just say that this technology is definitely just as impressive as Rocket Lab attempting to catch an Electron rocket booster in mid-air.

Flight Test 10 represents a key inflection point for SpinLaunch, as we’ve opened the Suborbital Accelerator system externally for our customers, strategic partners, and research groups. The data and insights collected from flight tests will be invaluable for both SpinLaunch, as we further the development of the Orbital Launch system, and for our customers who are looking to us to provide them with low-cost, high-cadence, sustainable access to space,” said Jonathan Yaney, Founder & CEO of SpinLaunch.

Currently it launches payloads into space and down again. Not into LEO. Just like Sounding Rockets and Blue Origin rockets do"

The Payload NASA Shot Into Sky With Giant Gun Came Down So Hard They Needed to Dig It Out With an Excavator

The Byte by Frank Landymore

Last month, space launch startup SpinLaunch shot a payload tens of thousands of feet into the air using a gigantic slingshot for the tenth time.

And what comes up must come down.

As expected, the payload came crashing down — but even harder than one might think, requiring a massive excavator to exhume it.

The test was carried out in September, but it wasn’t until a few days ago that SpinLaunch uploaded a video on its YouTube channel documenting the event.

The video shows the recovery crew heading out to where the payload, containing instruments, sensors, and ChipSats from the likes of NASA, Cornell University, and Airbus, slammed into the Earth, burying itself deep enough to require extensive machinery to recover it.

Amazingly, according to SpinLaunch’s press release, everything in the payload was undamaged — both at launch when it was blasted into the atmosphere at 10,000 Gs, and after it hit the ground.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Yeah, but how is it at Punkin Chunkin?
Somehow, I doubt a punkin' would withstand the G force needed to get a launch...Maybe if it was frozen...

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Yeah, but how is it at Punkin Chunkin?

Exactly! Let's forget all this space launch fluff and get to the serious topics!
