Brazil election goes to runoff as Bolsonaro outperforms polls

BRASILIA/RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Brazil's presidential election is headed for a run-off vote, electoral authorities said on Sunday, after President Jair Bolsonaro's surprising strength in the first round spoiled rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's hopes of winning outright.

With 99.7% of electronic votes counted, Lula was ahead with 48.4% of votes versus 43.3% for Bolsonaro, the national electoral authority reported. As neither got a majority of support, the race will go to a second-round vote on Oct. 30.

🇧🇷🇧🇷LULA WINS (Folha projects)

Lula elected to his 3rd term as President (won in 2002, re-elected 2006, term-limited out in 2010, imprisoned 2017, conviction nullified in 2020).

Bolsonaro becomes the 1st President to lose re-election attempt since Brazil re-democratized in 1985.

Lots of caricatures on all sides. Lula governed Brazil from 2002-2010. Brazil saw massive economic growth, surpassed UK to be the 6th largest economy in the world.

Left office with 85% approval. This year chose a center-right austerity establishmentarian as his Vice President.

But Lula is going to be very limited in what he can do. Bolsonaro's Party is the largest in both the House and Senate. Bolsonaro's allies controls key governorships around the country. Lula faces a much stronger bolsonarismo, and dependence on a corrupt Centrist faction.

Bolsonaro won every region of Brazil except for the one which coincidentally happens to be the most corrupt part of the country, Nordeste, which is controlled by drug traffickers and gangs.

Pro-Palestinian, pro-Iran Lula retakes Brazil’s presidency -analysis
Luis Inacio Lula da Silva once donned a keffiyeh and laid a wreath at the tomb of Palestinian leader and arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat.

Jerusalem lost a friend in Brasilia this week, when President Jair Bolsonaro, an enthusiastic Israel supporter, lost to former president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, who is vocally pro-Palestinian and nurtured ties between Brazil and Iran.

Da Silva, who is often just called “Lula,” became the first Brazilian president to visit Israel in 2010, but the trip was marked with controversy. ...

Then, da Silva donned a keffiyeh on his shoulders and laid a wreath at the tomb of Palestinian leader and arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat in Ramallah.

Concurrent media reports said that da Silva sought to meet with Hamas representatives, as well, which he thought would encourage peace and reconciliation. However, the meeting did not come to be.

Later in 2010, Brazil recognized a Palestinian state, setting off a wave of such recognitions in South Africa.

Da Silva continues to support unilateral Palestinian statehood, including Ramallah’s bid for to become a UN member.   ...

Biden is apparently keen to bear hug Lula b/c Bolsonaro & Trump had warm ties. Lula is pro-Putin, pro-China, solidly anti-American as far as our security and commercial interests in South America are concerned (see his vision for BRICS) and pro-Maduro. He’s not our friend.

Biden congratulates Lula on victory over Trump-backed Bolsonaro in Brazil
by Colin Meyn - 10/30/22 8:38 PM ET

President Biden on Sunday congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his victory in Brazil’s presidential election, beating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, who was backed by former President Donald Trump.

Bolsonaro, like Trump, has sowed doubt about the integrity of his country’s election system. Biden called Brazil’s election “free, fair, and credible” in his statement Sunday.

“I look forward to working together to continue the cooperation between our two countries in the months and years ahead,” Biden said of Lula.  ...
