Giorgia Meloni Wins Voting in Italy, in Breakthrough for Europe’s Hard Right
NY Times, Sep 26, 2022

ROME — Italy turned a page of European history on Sunday by electing a hard-right coalition led by Giorgia Meloni, whose long record of bashing the European Union, international bankers and migrants has sown concern about the nation’s reliability in the Western alliance.

Results released early Monday showed that Ms. Meloni, the leader of the nationalist Brothers of Italy, a party descended from the remnants of fascism, had led a right-wing coalition to a majority in Parliament, defeating a fractured left and a resurgent anti-establishment movement.

It will still be weeks before the new Italian Parliament is seated and a new government is formed, leaving plenty of time for political machinations and horse trading in a coalition with major differences. But Ms. Meloni’s strong showing, with about 26 percent of the vote, the highest of any single party, makes her the prohibitive favorite to become the country’s first female prime minister.

After saying she had suffered through a “violent electoral campaign” filled with unfair attacks, Ms. Meloni spoke about “reciprocal respect” and recreating “trust in the institutions.” She posed flashing a victory sign. “We are at the starting point,” she said, adding, “Italy chose us, and we will never betray it.”

The victory, in an election with lower turnout than usual, comes as formerly taboo and marginalized parties with Nazi or fascist heritages are entering the mainstream — and winning elections — across Europe.

This month, a hard-right group founded by neo-Nazis and skinheads became the largest party in Sweden’s likely governing coalition. In France this year, the far-right leader Marine Le Pen — for a second consecutive time — reached the final round of presidential elections. In Spain, the hard-right Vox, a party closely aligned with Ms. Meloni, is surging.

"This is Italy’s new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.  I’ve never heard any politician so perfectly explain what we’re up against and why we fight."  (Video)

Hungary and Italy.  That makes two sensible governments now in the EU.  Maybe mainstream Europe is starting to get the message that socialism does not work.  The EU was a fine idea so long as it was a free trade union. Once it became a mechanism for wealth redistribution, the writing was on the wall.  One wonders how long the Germans are going to be willing to have the rest of the EU suck at their teats?

I looked up this Giorgia Meloni lady is who will be Italy's first female Prime Minister.

She's campaigned under the slogan "God, country and family," fought covid lockdowns and vax mandates, opposes mass immigration, globalism, the "LGBT lobby," and is pro-life.

Take notes, @GOP. This is called an agenda. Nobody gets excited to vote for a party that just complains about the other side and then governs exactly like them.

People seek a bold vision. Your current "commitments" are unsatisfactory.

She's hardly "hard right" - that's a left-wing dog-whistle to try and buffalo people into believing that she's the reincarnation of Mussolini.

Was about to say the same. Her views look pretty main stream conservative, as far as U.S. standards.

Memo to my friends in the media covering Italy's elections:

Italian fascism — and especially Mussolini — were not "right wing," but rather another statist/collectivist ideology that was worshipped among left-wing intellectuals of the day.— Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) September 26, 2022

Italy’s new PM, Georgia Meloni, is not ‘far-right.’  If you think she is, you really need to brush up on your Nazi/Fascist history.

She’s what she says she is… centre-right. The left should stop calling every conservative opponent Nazis/Fascists. It’s so lazy. pic.twitter.com/4y3npmYpVA— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) September 26, 2022

Too entrenched.  It'll get ugly before that happens.

Was thinking what a Londoner awaking from a 25yr long coma would think of the City of London today.

Then I realized the same thing could be said for the majority of American cities/counties today.

Minneapolis aside, the former will "get ugly" based upon the incompatibility of Islam.

Your right, but it is ending.

The USA is not going to let the ESG movement continue after the Biden train wreck.

The American people elected Trump two times (the second was stolen) because he said America First.

We've gotten to the point where we don't want to carry the burden of someone else's luxury. Populism is sweeping the world and corrupt govt.'s won't be able to stop it.

Did you know that even as Head of the Anglican Religion he was quoted purposely as being "Defender of the Faiths", instead of "Defender of the Faith".  Seems the Muzzies have a strong ally on the throne.

Note that this is described as "far right", when in reality it is mainstream among conservatives. Ever, the press is presenting normal as "extremist" and their extremism as "normal".

Again with the headline “hard right!”. There’s nothing hard about it. Then I saw it was the New York Times, and okay the world made sense again.

By the way, I was born in Italy and my wife was born in Hungary. Conservatives attract.

I was in Britain in July.  i went to Canterbury, London and Bath.  I was shocked at the number of empty storefronts, the level of general disrepair and graffiti, and the number of poor and homeless on the streets.  I personally witnessed a naked couple in a doorway of a public street shooting heroin, oblivious to the folks walking by.

I came away thinking the British culture is in very serious decay, maybe even worse than ours, and that is saying a lot.
