Startling moment UFC star Renzo Gracie tackles and subdues a racist on the New York subway after man told him to 'speak English here'
•    MMA legend Renzo Gracie subdues 'racist' on New York subway platform
•    Gracie, who speaks Portuguese, says the man told him to speak English here
•    Gracie says he forced the man to apologise to him before letting him go

Startling footage has emerged of a fight on a New York subway platform involving former UFC fighter and Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Renzo Gracie.

In the clip that's gone viral on social media, 55-year-old Gracie - wearing a black shirt - can be seen in a physical clash with another man wearing a white shirt.

Gracie gets tripped and lands hard on the ground, but quickly uses his grappling skills to get in a dominant position over his opponent.

A woman tries to break up the fight, but a man wearing a Renzo Gracie T-shirt prevents her from getting involved.

The reason for the altercation is explained on a WhatsApp audio recording posted to Reddit, where Gracie details what happened.

The Brazilian claims he was returning from training and having a conversation with a friend in Portuguese when the aggressor told him to 'speak English here'.

Gracie says he told the man he was ridiculous and racist before the fight started.

After putting his assailant in a choke, Gracie claims he forced his assailant to apologise before letting him go.

Gracie, a 6th degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, has competed in the UFC, PRIDE, K-1 and ONE Championships during a 23-fight MMA career.

He also works as a martial arts coach, owning the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan, where he's trained the likes of UFC champions Georges St-Pierre, Chris Weidman and Matt Serra.

So, a guy - for whatever reason - says "speak English here" and in return he gets physically assaulted by a professional fighter?

Why isn't Mr. Gracie being charged with assault?

It appears he was assaulted.

It is not clear at what point in the altercation that occurred; however, the general tenor of the story is that someone said something that bruised the snowflake's ego, and he got violent.

Plot twist... guy he had in a choke hold doesn't look white, which is why they don't mention it.

Possibly so.

My wife has been told many times while at work talking to a customer, friend or coworker in Spanish that she needs to talk English by a customer. She's never gone violent, but she scolds that person and definitely puts them in their place.

Back in the day when a lot of my employees were Hispanic because high school kids were told by everyone that fast food work was for losers, the only thing we asked is that they tried to speak English as much as possible. That wasn't to oppress them or be racist, it was to try and help them better their English skills to make life easier for them and us. No one was ever told not to speak Spanish, hell the kitchen workers wouldn't understand if they didn't.

This crap with giving people a hard time for speaking their native language isn't new, 'Americans' gave my parents abuse for speaking Hungarian. Aside from the racists or bigots, a lot of people are just plain uncomfortable when they can't understand what others are sayin, as if it was their business anyway. Still it would help if the writer was clearer about who was the actual instigator of the physical altercation because having having your feeling hurt isn't enough.
