Dutch City Haarlem Becomes First In World To Ban Meat Adverts
Haarlem – a city 30km outside Amsterdam and home to more than 160,000 people – has taken the move in an effort to curb meat consumption and reduce the meat industry’s environmental impact.
The new rule, which comes into effect in 2024, will ban adverts for meat products in public spaces such as on billboards, buses, and at bus shelters. [bold, links added]
It has been met with backlash from the meat industry and some local councilors, who have branded it “patronizing” and “going too far”.
Other parts of the Netherlands such as Amsterdam and The Hague have already agreed on bans on “fossil fuel” commercials – such as adverts for holiday flights and petrol or diesel cars.
