The 500-year-old Crown of Scotland is placed on top of Her Majesty's coffin as her children Charles, Andrew, Anne and Edward look on in Edinburgh

Made from gold, silver and gems, crown is centrepiece of Honours of Scotland

The Crown of Scotland was placed on Her Majesty's coffin in Edinburgh's St Giles Cathedral today as her son King Charles and his siblings watched on.

The sombre moment was part of the service in the heart of the Scottish capital this afternoon.

Made from gold, silver and precious gems, the crown is the centrepiece of the Honours of Scotland - which are the oldest Crown jewels in Britain and among the oldest in Europe.

The crown was made in its current form in 1540 for King James V of Scotland. In its earliest form, the crown dates back to 1503, when it was depicted being worn by King James IV.

The crown was placed on the Queen's coffin after Her Majesty was carried to the church from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where she had been lying at rest after a six-hour journey from Balmoral yesterday.

King Charles III, the Queen Consort Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward watched the moving events unfold.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal walkabout with Prince William and Kate was delayed by nearly an hour because the Sussexes had to get changed into formal mourning attire, a royal expert claimed on US TV today.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had to 'quickly go and get changed' to meet mourners with the Prince and Princess of Wales outside Windsor Castle on Saturday afternoon, according to NBC's Daisy McAndrew.

The NBC News royal commentator told the network's Today show that she believed Meghan needed to have her 'hair and make-up' done and that the walkabout had been 'scheduled to be nearly an hour before they came'.

William and Harry have a well-documented troubled relationship but the death of their grandmother last Thursday saw the rivals shelve their differences when, with their wives, they viewed floral tributes left to the late Queen.

The new heir to the throne is understood to have invited his brother Harry in a text message to join them in meeting well-wishers outside the castle, which sources said William thought was an 'important show of unity'.

'They weren't wearing the proper formal mourning attire, so they had to quickly go and get changed – I guess, do hair and makeup for Meghan. So that's why they were late.'

Prince Andrew is set for 'central role' in Queen's funeral... 'but has no hope of return to public life once she is laid to rest': Disgraced duke will be granted temporary reprieve to mourn mother but is then expected to 'disappear'
Daily Mail, Sep 12, 2022

Prince Andrew is set for 'central role' in the Queen's funeral, 'but has no hope of return to public life once she is laid to rest', with the disgraced duke being granted a temporary reprieve to mourn his mother but is then expected to 'disappear'.

The Duke of York, who has been in hot water over his links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is expected to join his family as they unite in their grief, with sources saying it would be 'out of the question' for him to be excluded.

What form the truce takes at the Queen's service on Monday, September 19, remains to be seen, with reports suggesting that Prince Andrew is set to play a key role despite controversies in the last few years.  [...]

But this temporary reprieve is not set to become permanent, with both King Charles and Prince William making it clear that Andrew will not play any formal role in their reigns.

'Once it is all over, he will be expected to retreat back to a life lived well under the royal radar,' the paper reported.

Reminder.... At Prince Philip's funeral, to prevent Harry from feeling bad for not wearing a uniform  --- no one was permitted to wear one.

After three of the queen's children were in uniform and one in street clothes, looks like Harry's gonna get another taste of life without Gammy. :crossed:

Sophie holds back tears: Sombre Countess of Wessex struggles with her emotions as she joins Prince Edward at St Giles' Cathedral
Daily Mail, Sep 12, 2022

Sophie Wessex, the wife of the Queen's youngest son, showed her unwavering support to her husband this afternoon as she joined the royal family in procession to escort the Queen's coffin down Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

The royal, 57, joined the Queen's Consort in a fleet of cars as the Queen's children walked behind the hearse carrying the Queen to St Giles' Cathedral this afternoon, ahead of a service of thanksgiving.

Wearing a black suit and a matching headpiece, Sophie looked sombre as she joined her fellow royals for the deeply solemn 1,200 yard procession, which took place in bright sunshine, with hundreds of well-wishers lining the city's oldest streets.

Following the Queen's Piper, King Charles, in full military regalia, lead his siblings on foot including the Duke of York, Earl of Wessex and the Princess Royal - while the Queen Consort and other members of the monarchy followed in cars.

'Can you imagine Joe Biden on the bus?' Queen state funeral rules banning world leaders' private planes and demanding they are bussed in together spark incredulous reaction

Foreign office sent guidance to embassies about Queen's funeral at weekend
Dignitaries asked to fly commercial to the UK and take coach to the ceremony
One diplomat baulked at demand, saying: 'Can you imagine Biden on the bus?'
Anthony Albanese, prime minister of Australia, has confirmed he will fly private

Demands that world leaders use commercial jets and coaches to reach the funeral of Queen Elizabeth instead of private planes and cars have been met with disbelief.

Embassies that were sent invites to the solemn send-off over the weekend were told that all attendees will be asked to board a buses from a secret location in West London to Westminster Abbey because of 'tight security and road restrictions'.

But some leaders have baulked at the suggestion, with one diplomat saying: 'Can you imagine Joe Biden on the bus?'
