Jackson water crisis: Troops hand out 1.1m bottles of water in a day

More than a million bottles of water have been handed out in less than a day to people in Jackson, Mississippi due to a long-running water supply issue.

Nearly 200,000 people in the state's capital have been unable to use tap water for five days after flooding disabled a water treatment centre.

Officials say progress is being made to restore the supply as the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches.

But locals say relief is desperately needed due to the sweltering heat.

Both Mississippi National Guard troops - who have handed out 1.1m bottles of water in 24 hours - and an army of local volunteers have been helping to get water to people who are unable to drink tap water, bathe or flush toilets.

"It's been awful going without water," Shirley Barnes told the BBC as she queued for more bottles on Friday. "It's been a horrific experience."

"Trying to do your normal routines, that's been the hardest. Trying to boil water. Washing your face, taking your bath, cooking. It's like you living back in the caveman days."

"I never thought I would be in this predicament, but here we are," she added.

Debbie Upchurch, a local church volunteer, has been bringing bottled water to Jackson to distribute to locals.

Her daughter, a teacher in the community, has not been able to hold classes in-person this week and has been teaching online instead.

"Right now they can't meet for class because there's no water to cook with or [for] the restrooms," she said. "Sometimes that's the only meal they have, is what they have at breakfast and lunch at the schools."

First Lieutenant Roman Ramirez from the Mississippi National Guard told the BBC that his site was staffed with 44 soldiers who had distributed around 80,000 bottles by midday on Friday.

"There's a lot of emotion for the citizens here, but our job is just to show up and help where we can - give as much water as we can," he said................

This is absolutely tragic - they've been on a boil water notice since July 30 -- and now no water

Situation remains dire for residents of Jackson, Mississippi, as effort to restore water supply suffers setbacks

The situation remains dire for many Jackson, Mississippi, residents as the city enters the sixth day since a major water plant failed, leaving thousands of people unable to access clean tap water.
Efforts to restore the supply suffered a setback Friday when a chemical imbalance and reduced water pressure were detected.
"It's like fixing the airplane while you're still flying. You have to be very careful how you fix it so that you stay flying," Jim Craig, the senior deputy and director of health protection at the Mississippi health department, said Friday evening during a news conference.

"It's the same thing as we're trying to produce water. All that water demand needs to continue to occur and every time we have to do some maintenance then we have to offset some of that," Craig explained.

'We're suffering out here': Jackson residents and officials have been warning about water issues for years
The city of roughly 150,000 residents had been under a boil-water notice since July 30 -- and then flooding caused by heavy rainfall last weekend led to a chemical imbalance at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant. ........

Now that FEMA is involved, delays will be inevitable.  Move classes on line?  How ridiculous!! ! No potable water and no way to bathe, flush toilets, etc., and they expect kids to continue learning with on-line classes??  The stupidity is amazing!!

FEMA says too early to say when Mississippi water plant will be fixed

It is too early to say when a water treatment plant in Mississippi's state capital of Jackson that failed last week leaving tens of thousands of people without clean tap water can be fixed, the head of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Sunday.

Deanne Criswell told CNN's State of the Union that FEMA's current focus was on ensuring a supply of bottled drinking water while working with federal partners to see what needed to be done to bring the plant back to full operational capacity.

"I think it's still too early to tell," said Criswell, whose agency has been charged by President Joe Biden's administration with coordinating disaster relief efforts for Mississippi, when asked when the plant might be fully operational again.

"It's going to happen in phases," she said after visiting Jackson on Friday. "The focus right now is making sure we can get bottled water out, but also we are providing temporary measures to help increase the water pressure, so that people can at least flush their toilets and use their faucets.

"The longer-term and mid-term about how long it's going to take to actually make it safe to drink, I think we have a lot more to learn about what it's going to take to get that plant up and running."

Complications from recent floodwaters knocked Jackson's O.B. Curtis Water Plant offline on Monday night, leaving most of the state capital without safe running water and highlighting the problem of America's crumbling infrastructure, which Biden's administration has vowed to address.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency for Jackson and surrounding communities last week, warning the area's 180,000 people to avoid drinking tap water.

Mississippi activated its National Guard on Tuesday to help distribute water and Biden's administration approved an emergency declaration last week and ordered federal assistance to supplement the state's response.

The crisis has hobbled Jackson, forcing many stores and restaurants shut, while the public school system and Jackson State University had to move classes online................

So what happened to all that infrastructure money that Congress appropriated last year?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."
