The parents of a Marine killed in a suicide attack at Kabul airport last year say it is a 'slap in the face' every time a Biden administration official says the Afghan withdrawal was a success, and that more could have been done to protect their son.
Taylor Hoover, a 31-year-old Marine Corps staff sergeant from Utah, was one of the 13 U.S. personnel who died on August 26 last year when an Islamic State suicide bomber detonated his explosives.
It came towards the end of a chaotic mission to fly American civilians and Afghan allies out of Kabul after the Taliban had seized control of the country.
His family will mark the anniversary by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday. But they say lingering grief at his loss is mixed with anger and frustration at officials who continue to declare the operation to be a success.
And they say the more they learn about their son's final days, the more they believe his death could have been avoided.
'They know it was a botched mission,' said Hoover's mother Kelly Henson, 52.
'They know it was ridiculously thrown together.
'It's a slap in the face for me to hear them say that it was a success because they know it was not a success. Anyone with any intelligence knows that it was definitely a mistake.'
