School Calls Cops on Maskless 4-Year Old, Former Levi's Exec Jennifer Sey Has Thoughts

Officials at the Mountain View Whisman School District in California called police Thursday on a little boy who refused to wear a mask, his father said. The father, who gave his name as Shawn (and didn’t want his last name used) said of his son’s reaction:

He basically looked like a PTSD victim. He was inconsolable for about two hours.

The boy recently started transitional kindergarten in the San Francisco suburb of Mountain View and had begged his father to not make him wear a mask. Here’s how events unfolded according to the videotape Shawn took of the incident. From Fox News:

Off topic, but dammit, Mountain View is not a bleeping "San Francisco suburb"! Mountain View is so not in the same county as SF that it is two counties away from SF! What is so bleeping hard about taking 10 or 20 seconds to look at Google Maps or Mapquest and noticing that Mountain View is 25 or 30 bleeping miles from SF?! Especially for a news organization?

That said, yeah, school mask mandates are educrat-and-union-thug-and-Sacto-pol moronic. And unless the child's parents were being threatening and obstinate, calling MV PD was a educrat-and-union-thug waste of police time and resources.

In the the same vein, why did the current owner of the Anaheim Angels feel the need to rename them the Los Angeles Angels? LA is about thirty miles from Anaheim and it's not like everyone doesn't know where Anaheim is because of Disneyland.

A 30 mile difference doesn't necessarily mean that the community in question does not act as a suburb of SF.  Most of LI, out to western Suffolk county, is largely a suburb for NYC, and the distances there exceed 30 miles.

Well if being two counties away is insufficiently relevant, The following cities are between SF and Mountain View along US 101, in north-to-south order:

Brisbane
South San Francisco
San Bruno
Milbrae
Burlingame
San Mateo
Foster City
Belmont
San Carlos

Menlo Park
Palo Alto

I get referencing an less well known city to a city or area that is familiar. "Home of Moffett Naval Air Station," "10 miles north of San Jose," or, "Silicon Valley City ____ ____" would do that and be much more accurate. And actually inform readers.

You ignore the outrageous distances Californians who work in the major cities must commute to find reasonably priced housing.  It's likely there are folks in Mountain View who commute to SF.  Kamaji already noted that parts of Long Island greater distances from NYC than Mountain View is from SF are still economically and culturally suburbs of NYC.

Still not logically necessary.  East Northport, in Suffolk county, is two counties away from NYC and still, calling it a suburb of NYC is not completely unwarranted. 

Besides which, other than you, nobody seems to put any stock in the term as it is used in the article.   It’s a meaningless stylistic tic.

First some source context for what follows. Back in the late 70s I lived in MV, possibly within the Whisman School District (I was single, so I didn't pay much attention to such matters). On another tack, the SF Bay Area has two ConservaTalk radio stations, a less well known Salem Communications station and KSFO, which is probably the talker with the highest ratings. I was listening to KSFO's morning drive program, which is shared with a Sacramento station. The morning drive squirrels mentioned a few things relevant to this mess:

* Neither the state of California not Santa Clara County currently require masks in public schools; the school district has imposed the madate;

* The Whisman School District school board has decided to retain and exercise the power to mandate masks, regardless of cases and deaths data.

* The 4YO in this mess has sensory problems related to, among other things, masking; the school district insists that it has to verify this - forget any medical diagnostic work the family may have done - and that during the district's verification process, the child must be masked.

At a more general level, besides being fairly distant from SF, Mountain View, in the context of Silicon Valley, is not an uber-exclusive or high-end city (Monte Sereno, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, or Los Altos Hills would fit those adjectives). IOW, the board is not doing the will of rich elitists (and maybe not doing anybody's will, except for teachers union thuglings').
