Barnes tops Johnson by 7 points in Wisconsin Senate race: poll
by Jared Gans - 08/17/22 3:14 PM ET

Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) leads incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson (R) by 7 percentage points in their race for Johnson’s seat, according to a poll from Marquette University Law School released Wednesday.

The survey found that Barnes received support from 51 percent of respondents, compared to Johnson’s 44 percent. Barnes expanded his lead from Marquette’s June poll, in which he led Johnson by only 2 points, within the margin of error.

Barnes was still competing for the Democratic nomination at the time of the June poll but clinched the primary earlier this month.

The poll released Wednesday shows a sharp partisan divide between the candidates, with 95 percent of Democrats supporting Barnes and 92 percent of Republicans supporting Johnson. But Barnes leads among independents, 52 percent to 38 percent.

The two candidates were tied among independents in the June poll.

Barnes also has an advantage in favorability rating over Johnson.

The lieutenant governor is viewed favorably by 37 percent of respondents and unfavorably by 22 percent. Three in 10 respondents said they did not know enough about Barnes to respond, but that figure is down from 57 percent who said so in June.

Johnson is viewed favorably by 38 percent and unfavorably by 47 percent of those surveyed, while only 9 percent said they did not know enough to respond.

Johnson’s seat is considered a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats, who are seeking to maintain and expand their control of the Senate in the November midterm elections.

Johnson has become a controversial figure, as he has been a close ally to former President Trump.

The conservative senator has faced sharp pushback after he said earlier this month that Social Security and Medicare should be categorized as discretionary spending, requiring Congress to approve their budgets every year instead of allowing them to rise annually.

Democrats also released an ad this week targeting Johnson for his vote against implementing a $35 per month cap on out-of-pocket insulin costs for individuals with private insurance.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 10-15 among 811 registered voters. The margin of error was 4.2 points.

Another Senate seat lost to the dem-coms.

Looks like the Senate will be (at best) 52-48 in January...

I'll take your boots on the ground word for it @Lando Lincoln Any insights as to why?

I don't understand all these poll's, their done by partisan parties in this case a liberal law school in Milwaukee, have a huge margin of error and doesn't include likely include a single voter west of Madison.  What do national pollsters conclude about this race? In my opinion Ron Johnson is one of the best senators in the country, I wish I could vote for him but I am in the wrong state. I am close enough to know everyone west of Madison wouldn't think of voting for anyone but Ron Johnson.

I'm not sure I believe this poll .... but if this is the outcome, McConnell will take this as a win.   So, look for the GOP to sit out races in "trouble".

I've been following him..every time he is on Fox he begs for money for his campaign..he is the #1 target for the Dems.....

Now with Johnson, Walker, Oz and possibly Rubio it looks like the Senate is out of reach..

If the Dems win the Senate they can approve SCOTUS, shut down any impeachment proceedings and Congress on the whole will be at an impasse as far as Bills getting passed.. McCarthy negoiating with Chuckie.. we all know how that will work out... :crying:

@mystery-ak

The Senate dems (with Republican help) already approve SCOTUS, impeachment is the purview of the House -- the Senate cannot stop it,  a legislative impasse is an improvement over the free pass the democrats now have ---- especially enlightening if democrats block legislation sane Americans want, and if McCarthy wants to keep his place in the line of succession, he will be too busy keeping his new majority caucus happy to worry about Schumer.

Take the House filled with new blood America Firsters in 2022;  circle back for the Senate in 2024.

@Bigun - the ads against him are relentless and effective. They portray him as self-serving, anti-job and out of touch. They are serious, effective ads.

Thanks @Lando Lincoln I pray that the good people of your state are able to see beyond the dirty money being imported to try and influence their decisions!

Talking to people… I fear a bad outcome. And you are right, it is $$$ from outside the state. You wouldn’t even know who is running against him. You are simply told that Johnson is bad.

I’m starting to see some life from the Johnson camp. Enough so that I am not as gloomy as I was before.

I hope the Dems don't bank on a poll of registered voters in August.
The Republic is lost.
