An asteroid almost two-and-a-half times the size of a dinosaur is set to have a close flyby with the Earth on Tuesday, according to NASA's asteroid tracker.
 
Which asteroid is coming towards Earth?

The asteroid in question has been designated 2022 PW and is currently heading in our direction.

The asteroid in question will pass by on August 16, 2022, as noted by the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), specifically at the speed of 7.47 kilometers per second, which equates to 26,892 kilometers per hour. It also is roughly equal to nearly 22 times the speed of sound.

What is especially noteworthy about this asteroid heading near Earth, however, is the distance.

Seems a rather strange way to describe the size of the thing. Why a dinosaur and not an elephant, a Volkswagen or a school bus - you know, things that actually have a common and well-known size?  :laugh:

An Olympic swimming pool has a defined size, so that is a meaningful, if unorthodox, means of comparison; the term "dinosaur" by itself, does not, because dinosaurs came is so many different sizes, from the tiny microraptor, to the behemoth titanosaur.  An asteroid that was 2.3 times the size of a microraptor would leave some pretty colors in the night sky, and that would be about it; an asteroid 2.3 times the size of a titanosaur, for example, the Patagotitan, would leave a serious crater and devastating consequences.

I actually read it to mean that this asteroid is 2.3 times the size of the asteroid that took out the dinosaurs. Anyone else?
