    Novelist Salman Rushdie was reportedly stabbed before giving a speech in Chautauqua, New York.

An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.

In a press release, the New York State Police confirmed that a man rushed the stage and stabbed Rushdie in the neck.

"Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital," the press release said. "His condition is not yet known.   The interviewer suffered a minor head injury. A State Trooper assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene."

Authorities identify suspect who attacked author Salman Rushdie at western New York event

New York State Police identified the suspect who attacked Salman Rushdie as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey. The suspect stabbed Rushdie at least once in the neck and at least once in the abdomen, authorities said. Rushdie is undergoing surgery, state police said.

Author Salman Rushdie will likely be permanently maimed if he survives a stabbing attack during a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York on Friday.

Rushdie’s agent, Andrew Wylie, said in an email Friday evening that his client was on a ventilator and could not speak, according to the New York Times.

“The news is not good,” Wylie said. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”  ... Washington Examiner

Officials ban Post and AP from arraignment of Hadi Matar, suspect in Salman Rushdie attack

Authorities in upstate New York are barring press from attending the arraignment of Hadi Matar, the New Jersey man accused of the stabbing of writer Salman Rushdie.

Matar, 24, is scheduled to be arraigned at Chautauqua County Jail early Saturday, where he was transferred from the New York State Police barracks in Jamestown after the Friday attack.  ...

A spokesman for the New York State Unified Court System told The Post that the county jail is not set up for press attendance.

“This is a town and village court,” said Lucian Chalfen. “In that county the central location happens to be the jail. It is up to the Sheriff to accommodate if he can.”

Chautauqua County Warden Matthew Stuczynski denied The Post and the Associated Press entry to the public court proceeding, citing the “safety and security and good running order of the facility.”   ...

Rushdie’s assailant is reportedly a 24 year old Shi’ite immigrant from South Lebanon by the name of Hadi Matar. His fake driving license carried the name Hassan Mughniyah (in honor of HASSAN nasrallah + imad MUGHNIYAH?). His FB page expresses love for the Islamic Republic.
