 Republican Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski died Wednesday at the age of 58.



Walorksi, who represented Indiana's 2nd Congressional district since 2013, was killed in a car crash on Wednesday afternoon in Elkhart County, Indiana.

"On August 3, 2022 at approximately 12:32 PM the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle crash on SR 19 south of SR 119," the sheriff's office told Fox News Digital. "A northbound passenger car traveled left of center and collided head on with a southbound sports utility vehicle. All three occupants in the southbound vehicle died as a result of their injuries: Jackie Walorski, 58, Elkhart, Indiana Zachery Potts, 27, Mishawaka, Indiana Emma Thomson, 28, Washington, DC The sole occupant of the northbound vehicle, Edith Schmucker, 56, Nappanee, Indiana was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation. No additional information will be released at this time."

Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy responded to the news on Twitter asking his followers to keep Walorski's family in their thoughts and prayers.

I always keep a side eye when this kind of stuff happens. Though it's surely an accident, if you have the will, focus, means, and manpower you setup almost anything to look like an accident.

You just never rule anything out till the evidence is irrefutable.

Walorski successor to finish final weeks of late Indiana GOP congresswoman's term

Republican and Democratic officials will choose nominees to complete the final weeks of the late Rep. Jackie Walorski's House term. The Indiana Republican was killed on Wednesday in a car crash in her district.

Emma Thomson, 28, Walorski's communications director, and Zachery Potts, her 27-year-old district office director, were traveling with Walorski and also died in the accident, on state Route 19 in the congresswoman's hometown of South Bend, Indiana. Walorski, 58, was first elected to the House in 2012, after five years as a state representative.

A special election to complete Walorski’s unexpired House term will be held because the vacancy occurred more than 74 days before the general election, according to Indiana election law. That election almost certainly will coincide with the regularly scheduled Nov. 8 election for a full term, for the 118th Congress, which starts on Jan. 3, 2023. The truncated term will be a matter of weeks, with Walorski's successor likely to be sworn in during a post-Election Day lame-duck session of Congress.

Police change account of crash killing Indiana Rep. Walorski

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police have changed their description of the crash that killed Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, saying Thursday that it was the SUV in which she was a passenger that crossed a state highway’s centerline and caused the head-on crash.

Walorski and two members of her congressional staff died in the Wednesday afternoon crash in northern Indiana, along with the woman driving the other vehicle, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said.

The department’s initial account of the crash was that the car driven by Edith Schmucker, 56, Nappanee, Indiana, crossed into the SUV’s path, but the office released a statement Thursday saying investigators had talked with witnesses and viewed video evidence that their preliminary determination of which direction the vehicles were traveling was incorrect.

Investigators determined that the SUV driven by Zachery Potts, 27, of Mishawaka, Indiana, crossed the centerline for unknown reasons in a rural area near the town of Wakarusa. Potts was Walorski’s district director and the Republican chairman for northern Indiana’s St. Joseph County. Also killed in the crash was Emma Thomson, 28, of Washington, D.C., who was Walorski’s communications director.
