Legacy Media Falsely Link Recent Shark Attacks To Climate Change

shark jumpAs more people flock to the beaches this summer, it is also bringing more people into closer contact with sharks.

Consequently, there is an uptick in shark encounter stories in the news.

Multiple mainstream media outlets have blamed recent shark attacks on the East Coast on climate change-induced warming ocean temperatures. This attribution is false. [bold, links added]

Local news stations, The Daily Mail, Salon, and other corporate media sources claim that climate change is causing warmer ocean temperatures that bring more sharks closer to shore.

What morons.  It's because the environmental protection laws of the last 25-50 years are working.

The sharks are in Massachusetts waters because their numbers are increasing, and so are the populations of their prey.

Before the Great Whites were first seen off Cape Cod, fishermen were lobbying environmentalists to allow for a culling of the exploding seal population.  The overpopulation of seals was causing fewer fish to be caught, threatening commercial fishing. ... But then the sharks started to appear off Cape Cod, and they are culling the seal population for the fishermen.  Problem solved.

The hysterics are from people who've never watched Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.  It's eat or be eaten in Nature.

It's great to see the Cape Code Great Whites featured on Shark Week.  It's been a long time coming.  It's much better than the oceanic desert Massachusetts waters had become during the Michael Dukakis junta.
