Congressman and governor candidate Lee Zeldin attacked, nearly stabbed during upstate stump speech

Robert Pozarycki  |  July 21, 2022

Long Island Congressman and Republican nominee for governor Lee Zeldin was nearly stabbed by a would-be attacker who ran up and confronted him during a campaign stop in Rochester Thursday, it was reported.

According to WROC-TV, the knife-wielding suspect confronted Zeldin as he addressed a crowd at a VFW event in the town of Perinton.

The man jumped onto the stage where Zeldin was speaking and began yelling at him, witnesses told WROC. The suspect was subsequently wrestled to the ground by rally attendees and taken into custody, according to the New York State Republican Party.

Video of the incident quickly made the rounds on Twitter.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

Lee Zeldin’s alleged attacker quickly released from jail — just as pol predicted

By Snejana Farberov
July 22, 2022

The man who allegedly tried to stab Republican candidate for New York governor Lee Zeldin with a bladed weapon during a campaign stop on Thursday was released from jail within hours of his arrest on a felony charge — just as Zeldin had predicted.

David Jakubonis, 43, from Fairport, New York, was arraigned overnight in Perinton Town Court on a count of second-degree attempted assault stemming from the attack on Rep. Zeldin but was quickly released on his own recognizance.

In a tweet after the violent incident in Monroe County, Zeldin, who is running as a tough-on-crime candidate against incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, said he expected his alleged assailant to be back on the streets in no time.

“His words as he tried to stab me a few hours ago were ‘you’re done’, but several attendees, including @EspositoforNY, quickly jumped into action & tackled the guy,” the gubernatorial hopeful tweeted early Friday. “Law enforcement was on the scene within minutes. The attacker will likely be instantly released under NY’s laws.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Directed Supporters to Zeldin Campaign Event Hours Before Failed Attack

Jordan Dixon-Hamilton

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) sent out a press release urging her supporters to “RSVP” to her Republican challenger Rep. Lee Zeldin’s (R) upcoming campaign stop, just hours before a man rushed the stage at one of Zeldin’s events in a failed attack.

While Zeldin spoke at a campaign event in Fairport, New York, a man reportedly rushed the stage with a weapon in an apparent attempt to stab him on Thursday evening. Fortunately, Zeldin grabbed the attacker’s wrist long enough for other event attendees to step in and subdue the attacker.

However, as people like GOP strategist Arthur Schwartz and New York GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy pointed out, Hochul’s campaign sent out a press release just hours before the failed attack on Zeldin that blasted out the time and location of several of Zeldin campaign’s upcoming stops.

Hochul claimed that Zeldin and his team would spread “dangerous lies, misinformation, and his far-right agenda at these campaign events.”

“‘Big Lie’ Lee and his entourage of extremists kick off the statewide ‘MAGA Republican’ Bus Tour, which will make stops across the state peddling dangerous lies, misinformation, and his far-right agenda,” Hochul’s release read.

The New York governor also claimed that Zeldin “will be joined by top anti-abortion advocates, NRA enthusiasts, and a cast of extremist groups.”

Hochul urged her supporters to “RSVP to hear about Zeldin’s ‘Election Integrity Task Force,’ and his recent election fraud scandal in which his campaign photocopied over 11,000 duplicate petition signatures.”

“You sent your supporters after him. And they came,” Schwartz tweeted.

What is 2nd degree assault in NY?

Assault is the criminal charge you will face if you intentionally or recklessly cause physical injury to someone else. It is typically the charge applied when one person "beats up" another person.

Assault in the second degree is a class D felony. The maximum possible sentence is 7 years in prison. Because assault in the second degree is also classified as a violent felony, the judge is required to impose a minimum sentence of 2 years in prison.

So, should I hold my breath waiting for an apology, or a mea culpa of any sort, from Hochul?

Could Hochul at least issue Zeldin a security detail while she radicalizes people to try to stab him?

The State of New York immediately releasing @leezeldin’s attacker with no-cash bail is the best argument for electing Lee Zeldin that Lee Zeldin could have made.

Lee Zeldin is a sitting member of Congress. The DOJ should be prosecuting his attacker for attempted murder of a member of Congress. This should not be treated as a run of the mill assault charge where the defendant is already out of jail. This is a federal crime.

One of these guys was immediately released from jail after trying to stab the Republican nominee for governor.

The other was locked up in Rikers for stabbing somebody in self defense.

This is what New York has become.
