Raging rat brutally attacks pigeon in NYC showdown

The streets of “Zoo York” are really getting rough.

Wild video posted to social media Monday shows a rat savagely attacking a pigeon – with the victimized bird helplessly flapping its wings as the hostile rodent dragged it across a sidewalk.

The rat scampered beneath a car with the wounded bird in its mouth as the gruesome clip ends, leaving shocked observers to wonder about the flailing pigeon’s fate.

“He took son under the [vehicle] to finish him off,” one person replied. “This is cold.”

The footage was then posted Wednesday to the “What is New York” Instagram page, which has more than 1.3 million followers.

Usually, there's enough leavings around from people to keep both rats and pigeons (ground-rats and air-rats) satisfied without one going after the other, so in context it is a little odd to see a rat going after a pigeon.

Nah... What is unusual is that he had a shot at nailing a pigeon at all. If the pigeon was in prime shape, that should not be possible. Likely the pigeon was damaged or ill, and the rat is doing what rats do.

A lot of the pigeons are worse for the wear.  A lot of them seem to get their feet and toes stuck in things, or burned off somehow, and they gimp around on stumps.  They also get pretty bold, so a quick-witted rat watching an older pigeon going after something on the ground would have a chance to grab onto the pigeon.

Can't be a hate crime ... pigeons are rats with wings ... rat on winged rat violence.
