Physicists May Have Stumbled Upon an Entirely New Elementary Particle
Caroline Delbert - Yesterday 4:31 PM

An experiment deep underground hopes to explain the gallium anomaly.

The gallium anomaly dates back 20 years to a confusing experimental finding.

The answer could represent a fundamental shift, or it could be a theorized new particle.

Physicists are spelunking the complex findings from an experimental particle reactor found a mile below the surface in the mountains of Russia. What they found has the potential to send an earthquake through the bedrock of the standard model of physics itself: the results could confirm a new elementary particle, called a “sterile neutrino,” or demonstrate a need to revise a portion of the standard model.

I'd have thought for sure they would have named it the Biden in appreciation and dedication for real science. :facepalm2: :facepalm2:

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
So, scientists have been wrong for decades?

But the theory worked fine--in theory.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Not really.  Scientists have always known the Standard Model wasn't complete and without flaw, so being able to resolve one of those flaws is precisely how science works.

Or, in other words, science is NEVER settled!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Yes.  That being said, some parts are more settled than others.  I'll go out on a limb and say that the existence of the electron is pretty well settled.

But earth's weather most assuredly is not!
