Earlier this week, police in Akron, Ohio, fired nearly 100 bullets at a young, black suspect, and city officials are preparing themselves for a possibly violent backlash from the community and elsewhere.

According to reports, police attempted to pull Jayland Walker over shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning, when he suddenly took off and led them on a high-speed chase for several minutes. They say he then attempted to flee on foot and at some point discharged a weapon.

A summary of the events posted to the Akron Police Department Facebook page claims that "actions by the suspect caused the officers to perceive he posed a deadly threat to them. In response to this threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect."

He died shortly thereafter.

Sources told WKYC-TV that while no gun was found on Walker after he was killed, a gun and multiple shell casings were recovered from his vehicle................

Heated protests broke out in downtown Akron, Ohio, Sunday, raging late into the night, after police released graphic body camera video showing black DoorDash deliveryman Jayland Walker being shot dozens of times as he tried to flee a traffic stop.

Demonstrations have been held around Akron since the June 27 police shooting of Walker, but they intensified Sunday after police made the video public, with Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan calling it “heartbreaking.”

Video captured cops dressed in riot gear and carrying shields confronting demonstrators, who could be heard chanting, “F–k the police,” “Justice for Jayland” and “We are done dying,” reported News 5 Cleveland. ...

Police attempted to pull over Walker’s car at around 12:30 p.m. last Monday for unspecified traffic and equipment violations, but he refused to stop, leading officers on a chase.

Police said Walker fired a shot from his car during the pursuit, and a transportation department camera captured what appeared to be a muzzle flash coming from the vehicle.

Mylett said that changed the nature of the case from “a routine traffic stop to now a public safety issue.”

Body camera videos show what unfolded after the roughly six-minute pursuit. Several shouting officers with guns drawn approach the slowing car on foot, as it rolls up over a curb and onto a sidewalk.

Walker wearing a ski mask exits the passenger door and runs toward a parking lot. Police chase him for about 10 seconds before officers fire from multiple directions, in a burst of shots that lasts 6 or 7 seconds. ...

Ya know, even if you believe The Police are out to get you, leading police on a high speed chase while firing a gun out your window at them is not likely to end well. And carrying and brandishing that gun in a subsequent foot chase, even less likely to end well.

It's said the guy was unarmed when shot. Well, maybe he was. While in the car, however, he repeatedly a semi-automatic pistol. When he fled the car, he left the pistol on the front seat - but the cops couldn't have known that. It was dark. It was reasonable for them to consider him still an immediate threat.

The Akron Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #7 released a statement on Sunday following the fatal altercation between officers and 25-year-old Jayland Walker earlier this week.

They revealed that the car Walker had used to avoid police on Monday morning had also been involved in a "felony fleeing police chase" the previous morning.   ...
