USA Today forced to delete 23 articles after finding out a reporter fabricated sources

Left-wing legacy news outlet and Facebook fact-checking partner USA Today was forced to scrub almost two dozen articles from its website last week after an investigation found that a reporter had apparently fabricated her sources.

USA Today, which joined Facebook’s Third-Party Fact-Checking Program in March 2020 to identify and flag online “misinformation”, reported Thursday that it had removed 23 articles written by reporter Gabriela Miranda after an audit triggered by an external correction request.

“The audit revealed that some individuals quoted were not affiliated with the organizations claimed and appeared to be fabricated,” the newspaper said in a statement. “The existence of other individuals quoted could not be independently verified. In addition, some stories included quotes that should have been credited to others.”

“We strive to be accurate and factual in all our content and regret this situation,” USA Today, which is owned by parent company Gannett, added.

In addition to allegedly faking sources and inaccurately attributing quotes, Miranda also “took steps to deceive investigators by producing false evidence of her news gathering, including recordings of interviews, according to the person briefed on the inquiry,” The New York Times reported....................

I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
They should have to issue an edition reprinting all of the FAKE NEWS articles and apologize for any damage done by any of them.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Agreed, but it's a liberal news source and I'm just glad that they were forced to delete articles.

The problem with them just deleting them is that the evidence of their lying is removed.

If they have to republish the articles with an apology for each and indicating the lies and unsupported statements, that is evidence (and every page costs money).

That's right - Journalism would require the articles to stand with an editors note debunking the falsity fully, with the where and the why of it... Merely deleting the articles leaves one wondering what the lies were - Which fake news was this?

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-
