Huntsville airport approved for landing space vehicles

“Fly Huntsville” has taken on a new meaning with the international airport’s approval as a landing site for commercial space vehicles.

In the near future, the Dream Chaser, America’s Spaceplane, is expected to land on the Huntsville International Airport’s eastern runway, a stretch of asphalt that until this time has accommodated more common commercial aircraft landing from such hubs as Atlanta and Charlotte.

Huntsville International is the first commercial airport in the United States to be granted such status by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Mary Swanstrom, public relations manager at Huntsville International, said the application for the Reentry Vehicle License was submitted to the FAA last year. Dream Chaser could have the option to land at the airport as early as early as 2023, she said.

Response to the news has been “overwhelmingly supportive,” Swanstrom said. “Our community has been working towards this for some years now.”
