The World Economic Forum conference kicked off today in Davos, Switzerland. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky opened the annual conference by requesting $5 billion a month from the global community.

Zelensky requested the cash infusion immediately.

Zelensky Requests $5 Billion a Month from Global Community in World Economic Forum Speech

In the three-day summit’s opening address, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky, dressed in his trademark wartime olive-green T-shirt, and projected on monitors from Kyiv, told about 1,000 CEOs and government officials that Ukraine needs $5 billion a month, beginning immediately, in order to stave off full-blown economic collapse—a collapse that would have deep global ramifications.

“The amount of work is enormous,” he said. “We have more than a half a trillion dollars in losses, and tens of thousands of facilities destroyed. We need to rebuild entire cities and industries.”

Yet rather than describing the dire situation as a crisis, Zelensky cast it as a potentially lucrative opportunity for Western countries and companies.

“Patronage” for investors

Zelensky said Ukraine would have a “special, historically significant model of rebuilding,” in which companies and countries could choose a specific region or mine to rebuild. This system, which he called a “patronage,” is meant as a way of attracting the world’s top engineers and architects to Europe’s biggest reconstruction since the aftermath of the Second World War, nearly 80 years ago.

US Lawmakers Expect Continued Cooperation on Ukraine (1:50 p.m.)

US lawmakers from both parties are confident the country will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to fight off Russia’s invasion, downplaying the idea that electoral politics will soon interfere with bipartisan cooperation.

Republican Senator Roger Wicker said the Senate was “reflecting public opinion” when it passed a $40 billion bill last week to help Ukraine. Democrat Chris Coons, however, acknowledged that the pandemic and inflation, especially rising energy prices, will divert attention ahead of the November midterm elections that will decide control of both the House and Senate.

“I think Putin is counting on the West to lose focus,” Coons said. “And I think that is our real challenge. To ensure we are providing enough support for Ukraine so they can make real gains on the battle field soon and get to some negotiation that is obviously Ukrainian led.”

These issues were discussed Monday at the World Economic Forum in Davos by a panel of executives from the corporate, government, and nonprofit worlds, who offered both optimism and stark assessments of where the global community is lagging. The event kicked off with an introduction by COP26 President and British politician Alok Sharma in which he touted the conference’s success in agreeing on the pact and urged for more participation in the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI).

Davos updates | Urgent need in Afghanistan is saving economy

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — Two high-level speakers at the World Economic Forum gathering say Afghanistan’s most urgent need is saving its economy from complete collapse.

Achim Steiner, administrator of the United Nations Development Program, said Monday in Davos that “we cannot abandon 40 million Afghans simply on the principle of moral outrage.”

... The Swiss government will deploy as many as 5,000 military personnel to support local police. Air force jets will again circle above to enforce a no-fly zone.

Geneva-based WEF says the meeting will bring together more than 2,000 leaders and experts from around the world, somewhat smaller than some past meetings. No government or corporate bigwigs from Russia were invited, because of the Ukraine war.

Topics on the agenda include the pandemic recovery, tackling climate change, the future for work, accelerating stakeholder capitalism, and harnessing new technologies.  ...
