Would require DOJ license

Do you want Merrick Garland to decide if you're eligible to own a gun every time you acquire a new firearm?

Senate Democrats are pushing gun control in the run-up to the midterms, in the form of a bill introduced on Thursday.

They're using the Buffalo mass shooting as a political tool, even though the gunman easily bypassed New York's gun control laws to attack unarmed grocery shoppers.

Democratic Sens. Cory Booker, Richard Blumenthal and Bob Menendez are introducing the Federal Firearms Licensing Act, according to Politico.

The law would fundamentally revise gun ownership from a right enjoyed by American citizens to a privilege bestowed by the government at its own discretion.

Acquiring or buying a new gun would require a lengthy licensing process through the Department of Justice -- every time you purchase a new firearm.

Congressional whack-a-mole By KATHERINE TULLY-MCMANUS 05/19/2022

Quote
FIRST IN HUDDLE: BOOKER INTRODUCES GUN LEGISLATION— Democrats have not leaned into gun control measures in the wake of the racist shooter’s deadly attack in Buffalo over the weekend, but Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is taking on the issue despite long legislative odds. Booker, along with Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), is introducing legislation today that would require people trying to get a firearm to get a license from the Department of Justice before they can buy or receive a gun. The DOJ license would require both a written firearm safety test and hands-on training, a criminal background check and submission of fingerprints and proof of identity. The license would only be available to people over 21 years of age, essentially raising the age of gun ownership to 21. “This is the moment to enact ambitious legislation - as a nation, we must rise to it, or we are fated to witness the deadly scenes of this past weekend and years past over again,” Booker said in a statement. Read the bill text.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a leading advocate for gun safety legislation shares Booker’s sense of urgency and told The New York Times’ Annie Karni that even if legislation cannot clear Congress, Democrats need to talk more about guns, especially with voters. Congress Is Paralyzed on Guns. Here’s Why Chris Murphy Is Still Hopeful.

Sure. They want to eliminate, if not greatly restrict, both First and Second Amendment rights - and they'll do it incrementally.

Connecticut already has a law to this same effect (on a statewide level) in place already.

One cannot buy a firearm (of any type, including long arms) in Connecticut unless one has obtained a card/license from the state to do so. To get one, one must attend training classes, pass state checks, etc.

This is something "separate from" a "concealed carry license".
You must have this card before you can buy any firearm (even one that will not be carried, but just kept at home).

I believe one cannot buy ammunition (again of any kind) in CT without one.

I believe these laws were passed subsequent to the Sandy Hook School shootings.

Whether this has yet to be challenged in federal court, can't say.
Any "challenge" wouldn't have a chance in the CT state court system.

Dems’ new gun control bill: federal license needed to buy one gun, confiscation, 5-year limit on license

American Military News by  Liz George  May 20, 2022

Senate Democrats introduced a strict new gun control bill on Thursday that would require all Americans to obtain a five-year federal firearm license before purchasing a single gun. The bill also authorizes the government to confiscate an individual’s guns if the license is revoked.

The Federal Firearm Licensing Act would force Americans to undergo firearm safety training — including a written test and hands-on training — in order to receive a license. Gun buyers would also be required to complete a criminal background check, submit fingerprints and proof of identity, and be over the age of 21.

The bill would also force gun buyers to disclose “identifying information on the firearm that the person intends to obtain, including the make, model, and serial number, and the identity of the firearm seller or transferor.”

According to the bill’s text, the license issued would “be valid for the purchase of a single firearm.” It’s unclear if additional gun purchases would require an entirely new license, or if they are allowed at all.

@rustynail

Never fail,that will become a reality immediately after the gun confiscation program goes through. Free and open access to news about government doings will be a BIG-TIME public no-no. You will read and repeat what you are told to read and repeat if you know what is good for you!

Dems want to eliminate the right of free speech with censorship. They want to eliminate the right to bear arms. Can the right to vote be far behind?

@AARguy

Oh,you will always have the right to vote,but they will always be the one counting the votes.

Or as my Russian friends used to say,"We vote,and our government counts the votes for us. Sometimes they even vote FOR us if we are sick,dead,in prison,etc,etc,etc."

@Smokin Joe

When was the last time in your actual memory that our goobermint paid any attention to the US Constitution on anything that mattered to you?

Seems like for most of MY life,they have just added things as rights that should have never been added (created Rights out of thin air),and ignored anything already codified into law that may have kept them from doing what they wanted and needed to do in order to pull in the under the table money and create new rights as well as new voters out of thin air.

The hippies were right in the 1960's. Government WAS out of control and needed to be reined in. Most of them just picked the wrong side to support due to the ignorance of being children.

Senate Democrats Introduce New Gun Control Bill – Requires DOJ License for Gun Purchases with a 5-Year License Limit – And Government Power of Confiscation
By Jim Hoft
Published May 21, 2022 at 2:15pm

Senate Democrats on Thursday introduced an ambitious new gun control legislation that would require all Americans to obtain a Department of Justice (DOJ) license with a 5-year limit before purchasing a single gun. The new bill would also give the government the power to confiscate guns if the license is revoked.

This new legislation was introduced by Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn).

The newly introduced bill is unconstitutional and a direct attack on the Second Amendment, which ‘protects the right to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.’
