Starlink, a massive satellite-based broadband internet service due to enter orbit in the near future, is said to be completely IP-less. At least, its creator and SpaceX founder Elon Musk claimed that would be the case.
In response to a tweet debating what type of connection SpaceX will use for Starlink, the tech entrepreneur explained that Starlink will not use standard IPv6 connections. In fact, he says it “will be simpler than IPv6 and will have tiny packet overhead.” It will also be “definitely” peer-to-peer.
Shortly thereafter, in response to another tweet asking how he would ensure this peer-to-peer connection remained secure, Musk detailed the technology he envisioned for Starlink. At a basic level, he sees “end-to-end encryption encoded at the firmware level.” Musk believes that this technology is “unlikely to be hacked [with] current computer technology” and, if it is hacked after all, “a crypto fix goes out immediately [a] network-wide firmware update.”
When A Twitter user pointed this outThis would mean that SpaceX’s Starlink terminals would receive over-the-air updates in a very similar way to Musk’s Tesla car brand.
