Asian Students Excel Because Of Hard Work, Not Rich Parents

It’s clear many people need to understand that Asian Americans’ excellence comes not from privilege, but from hard work and cultural virtues accessible to all.

ASan Diego-area superintendent was placed on administrative leave last week after her disparaging remarks about Asian students sparked outrage.

During a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training on April 11, when asked why Asian students perform so well in school, Cheryl James-Ward attributed it to family wealth. She said: “We have an influx of Asians from China, and the people who are able to make that journey are wealthy. You cannot come to America and buy a house for $2 million unless you have money. You cannot come to America and buy a house for $2 million unless you have money.”

James-Ward doubled down when the board’s president pushed back. She said: “In my community, Carmel Valley, I have, not so much today, but up until a couple of years ago, we had a large influx of Chinese families moving in sight unseen into our homes, into the community, and that requires money.” In comparison, according to James-Ward, “in some of our Latinx communities, they don’t have that type of money, parents are working two jobs. They’re working from sunup to sundown.”

James-Ward’s attempt to use the wealth of a small subset of Asian Americans to explain away Asian students’ overall academic achievements is a common false narrative spread in an attempt to explain away why, as a group, Asian-Americans tend to perform the best academically and often economically.

This narrative is ignorant, false, and rude in a way that would not be culturally acceptable were it spread about other racial groups. So let’s look at her comments and the truth, as it’s clear many people need to understand that Asian Americans’ excellence comes not from privilege, but from hard work and cultural virtues accessible to all.

Here's Ms. James-Ward herself:

Communism.

They come into a public education system in tune with the ideals they brought with them. They have incredible stamina for conforming to standards that would exhaust most people.

But do they disproportionately succeed outside of education? Not really. The Asian American culture is well suited for school but not much else.

It's hardly communism.

The "boat people" (refugees from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Canton) in the 1970s came to this country with nothing.  Their extended families worked, sacrificed, and emphasized the value of education.

I distinguish refugees from the millionaires and billionaires that the Federal government has allowed to buy their way into this country, especially by investing in real estate.

Exactly.  Not only that, the refugees who came here in the '70s with nothing also had to work against the headwinds of both war-generated bias as well as racial bias.  Notwithstanding all of that, they didn't sulk in their tea leaves and whinge about victimization; they worked hard and built a life for themselves and their children and grandchildren.

You mean that people who work hard to succeed are more successful than those who major in getting high and learning the latest dances and rap songs?

Hooda thunk it?

@jmyrlefuller

Not really. It is no big secret that people who work hard to do their best in both school and in real life tend to be more successful than the slackers who spend their time hanging out in malls.

This ain't rocket science.

But do they disproportionately succeed outside of education?

I am not really familiar with any studies that have been done on this, but I would be shocked if they did any better than any other group of people who took learning seriously and worked hard at doing the best they can do. People with THAT mindset will always succeed better than slackers.

Unless,of course, the slackers come from family money. Being born rich is a HELL of an advantage. You can even hire people to do your thinking for you.

Don't believe it,ask a Kennedy or a Bush.

Not really. The Asian American culture is well suited for school but not much else.

I gotta disagree with that one,big time. They do as well as any other group if given an equal opportunity to advance. Other than their appearance and the cultural drive they grow up under that drills into them the need to be successful at whatever they do,they are the same as everybody else. No better,no worse.

They got the reputation of being super bright purely because they work hard to succeed at a time when it SEEMS like everyone else is more concerned with doing the absolute minimum they need to do. This makes them stand out.

Unfortunately for them,it also creates a lot of biases towards them.

I lived in Asia for several years and worked with Asians every day in their own countries,so I MIGHT have some insights on this that most Americans don't have.

For the most part,I like them as well as admire them. We would all  be better off if more people were willing to study hard and work hard in order to succeed.
