Suspects walk free after arrests by NYPD’s new anti-gun teams

By Craig McCarthy and Gabrielle Fonrouge
April 24, 2022

Four men allegedly busted with weapons — including some that were loaded — by the NYPD’s new anti-gun unit were allowed to walk free within hours of their arrest, thanks to lax judges and bail reform, The Post has learned.

The NYPD said the new Neighborhood Safety Teams made 25 gun arrests in their first three weeks since launching in March, but The Post was only able to obtain court records or information for 12 of the cases.

Of those 12, just one man remains behind bars — meaning 11 of the defendants are back on the street, including the four who were cut loose with no bail. The others had posted bail that was set in their respective cases.

One of the sprung includes Tyquise Bell, 23, who was allegedly nabbed by NST cops on March 30 in the Bronx after they spotted a 9mm Taurus pistol inside the lower leg of his pants, court records say.

New NYPD anti-gun units can’t do much when Albany still insists on protecting perps, not the public

Mayor Eric Adams’ new NYPD anti-gun units are a fine effort to start reducing violent crime, but it’s hard to see how much good they can do as long as the Democrats who run state government refuse to fix the no-bail laws.

As The Post reports, perps caught with weapons are still freed within hours.

We could only get records on 12 of the 25 arrests so far by the anti-gun Neighborhood Safety Teams, but 11 of those perps are out of jail already.

That includes four allegedly caught with guns who were loose within hours — some because the charges weren’t bail-eligible, others because the judges decided against ordering remand because the law orders them to go easy. ... Rest of editorial at NY Post

A Fishrrman pretty-fearless prediction:
These "no-bail" laws are not going to be fixed any time soon.
Perhaps not for a LONG time.
Perhaps not at all...
