Macron faces a tough fight as France votes on Sunday

France votes on Sunday in the first round of a presidential election, with far-right candidate Marine Le Pen posing an unexpected threat to President Emmanuel Macron's re-election hopes.

Until just weeks ago, opinion polls pointed to an easy win for the pro-European Union, centrist Macron, who was boosted by his active diplomacy over Ukraine, a strong economic recovery and the weakness of a fragmented opposition.

But his late entry into the campaign, with only one major rally that even his supporters found underwhelming, and his focus on an unpopular plan to increase the retirement age, have dented the president's ratings, along with a steep rise in inflation.

In contrast, the anti-immigration, eurosceptic far-right Le Pen has toured France confidently, all smiles, her supporters chanting "We will win! We will win!". She has been boosted by a months-long focus on cost of living issues and a big drop in support for her rival on the far-right, Eric Zemmour.

For sure, opinion polls still see Macron leading the first round and winning a runoff against Le Pen on April 24, but several surveys now say this is within the margin of error............

I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

Why is it that whenever anyone runs right of center, they are labeled as "far-right", but when anyone runs left of center, they are labeled a 'moderate'?

Mélenchon is the National Socialist candidate.

France's Macron and Le Pen head for cliffhanger April 24 election runoff
Reuters, Apr 10, 2022

PARIS, April 10 (Reuters) - French leader Emmanuel Macron and challenger Marine Le Pen qualified on Sunday for what promises to be a very tightly fought presidential election runoff on April 24, pitting a pro-European economic liberal against a far-right nationalist.

@laurenboebert

The socialist nation of France held elections today.

In that election there was no mail-in voting, early voting or use of voting machines.

There was a mandatory proof of ID to vote.

Why can’t we get that basic election security here?

EU Exhumes 18 Year Old Embezzlement Charges to Derail Le Pen Presidential Bid

Presumably as part of a deliberate effort to derail her presidential chances, the European Union has exhumed 18-year-old embezzlement charges against Marine Le Pen.

“The EU’s anti-fraud body has accused French far-right leader Marine Le Pen and associates of embezzling around 600,000 euros during their time as MEPs,” reports AFP.

The National Rally leader is personally accused of embezzling “around 137,000 euros ($150,000) worth of public money from the Strasbourg parliament when she was an MEP between 2004 and 2017.”

Le Pen’s lawyer Rodolphe Bosselut dismissed the charges, adding that the “timing” of them was suspicious.

Noting that the report relates to “old facts more than ten years old,” Bosselut highlighted how Le Pen “has not been summoned by any French judicial authority” to answer the charges.

“I’m surprised by the timing of such a strong disclosure and the instrumentalisation,” said Bosselut. ...

As the French Election continues to be too close to call, Emmanuel Macron has released a series of informal photographs in a bid to garner support from younger voters.

Six days ahead of the presidential vote, Mr Macron’s personal photographer posted some behind the scenes photographs of the French President on social media.

In one candid photo, Mr Macron can be seen lounging on a yellow sofa with his shirt half unbuttoned, revealing a wealth of chest hair.

An Ipsos-Sopra Steria survey yesterday showed Mr Macron has slightly extended his lead, but only marginally. ...
