Susan Collins to make Supreme Court decision 'relatively soon'

GOP Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on Tuesday met with Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for a second time, saying she would decide “relatively soon” if she’ll support her Supreme Court nomination.

“I had a good meeting with Judge Jackson. She provided clarification on some of the issues, so it was a useful meeting and I’ll reflect on her answers tonight,” Collins said after the meeting.

Collins said that she used the meeting to ask follow up questions stemming from Jackson’s Supreme Court hearing last week.

Collins indicated that she wouldn’t have additional meetings with Jackson, crediting her for being “generous” with her time.

Collins and GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) voted for Jackson last year for her appeals court spot.

Collins is viewed as the most likely GOP “yes” vote. She’s supported every Supreme Court nominee since she joined the Senate except Justice Amy Coney Barrett, whom she opposed because the vote came just weeks before the 2020 election.

Collins to back Jackson for Supreme Court

Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) on Wednesday said she would support Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the Supreme Court, becoming the first Republican to back her for confirmation.

"After reviewing Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s extensive record, watching much of her hearing testimony, and meeting with her twice in person, I have concluded that she possesses the experience, qualifications, and integrity to serve as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court," Collins said in a statement.

"I will, therefore, vote to confirm her to this position," she added.


The decision by Collins to back Jackson means there will be no tie vote in the Senate on her confirmation assuming all 50 Democrats back her, as expected.

It is not clear if any other Republicans will vote for Jackson, though there has been speculation that Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) could support her.

Jackson is horrible, otherwise Biden would have nominated someone else.  But Susan Collins would not matter anyway, since Manchin is on board.  You have to remember Barack Obama carried Maine by 17 points.  Polquin can win the 2nd district this fall, and he is with us maybe 65% of the time.
