Kremlin Spokesman Eases Off Threat of Using Nuclear WeaponsBy Alex Leary
March 28, 2022
In a U.S. television interview Monday, the spokesman of Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to ease off a threat of using nuclear weapons, though he didn't completely disavow the possibility.
“No one is thinking about using—about even the idea of using a nuclear weapon,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on PBS NewsHour.
He said that Russia had the right to use nuclear weapons in the event the country faced an existential threat, but drew a distinction between that threat and what he called the “special military operation in Ukraine.” He didn't say what the Kremlin considered an existential threat.
“They have nothing to do with each other,” he added. Still he reiterated Mr. Putin’s warning that other nations shouldn't interfere in Russia’s invasion in Ukraine. “He was very strict in his warning, and he was quite tough. And I think that everyone understands what he meant.”
Asked if that means using nuclear weapons, Mr. Peskov said, “No, I don't think so,” and quickly added that Mr. Putin made clear Russia had “all the possibilities” to punish those who interfere.
Mr. Putin has repeatedly raised the specter of nuclear war since he launched the invasion of Ukraine last month.
