Biden to announce Russian energy import ban
By Amie Parnes,Rachel Frazin and Morgan Chalfant - 03/08/22 09:03 AM EST

President Biden is expected to announce Tuesday that the U.S. will ban Russian oil, natural gas and coal imports as part of his administration’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A source familiar with the plans confirmed to The Hill that Biden intends to announce the ban, which was first reported by Bloomberg.

The White House said in updated guidance Tuesday morning that Biden will speak at 10:45 a.m. and will “announce actions to continue to hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked and unjustified war on Ukraine.”

Politics of Russian oil ban fuels Democratic angst
By Alexander Bolton - 03/08/22 06:00 AM EST

The economic reverberations of a proposed ban on Russian oil and gas imports are fueling angst among Democratic lawmakers who are wrestling over what to do about rising prices, which have mushroomed into a big political problem for President Biden.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers are coalescing behind a proposal sponsored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to ban Russian energy imports but some Democrats worry it could boomerang on them if it leads to higher inflation.

Democratic senators say they worry that oil companies could use the ban on Russian imports as an excuse to further increase gas prices and that they’ll wind up getting the blame.

They also expect Republicans to ratchet up calls to open up federal lands to oil and gas exploration, something Biden and his Democratic allies don’t want to do. Democrats argue that more drilling on federal lands won’t make a difference in fuel prices in the near term.

Oil Prices Jump on Reports U.S. Will Ban Russian Oil and Natural Gas Imports

Multiple news outlets reported that a ban on Russian oil and natural gas is expected as soon as Tuesday.
John Carney 8 Mar 2022, 5:51 AM PST

Oil prices jumped higher on Tuesday morning after news organizations reported that the Biden administration is poised to ban U.S. imports of Russian energy.

The ban will cover Russian oil, liquefied natural gas, and coal, according to a Bloomberg news report citing two anonymous sources. NBC News also reported that “two sources familiar with the matter” said the ban is expected to come Tuesday.

Bloomberg’s report said the decision was made “in consultation with European allies.” Europe is much more reliant on Russian energy, especially Russian natural gas, than the U.S.

Brent crude, the global benchmark, jumped to $129.58. West Texas Intermediate moved up to $124.95.

'Announcing a ban' is a far cry from actually implementing a ban.  He already gave his sanction speech two weeks ago, yet here we are today still buying oil from Russia.  Just like $350 million in military aid is still sitting in a warehouse, and Soviet fighters offered to Ukraine are still sitting in hangers in Poland and Estonia.  Don't believe a word this Liar-in-Chief has to say.

On Friday, Biden will be calling on Congress to 'do something' about a Russian oil ban as he flies off for another weekend in Delaware.

Jim Jordan blasts Biden over oil: He's talking to other countries because he's afraid to stand up to his party
President slammed for seeking outside alternatives to U.S. energy production as gas prices soar

By Fox News Staff | Fox News

REP. JIM JORDAN: I sat in a hearing a few months ago where Ro Khanna, a Democrat member from California -- the state that's now got a $7 gas. He had the oil and gas executives there in front of them, and he badgered every one of them, asking them one simple question: Will you pledge to decrease production this year? I mean, the Democrats want $7 gas. So that is the biggest problem.

What that means to middle class families, how that hurts our economy, how that drives up the price of everything because you got – it takes fuel to move goods around the country. So it's complete craziness, but that's where the left is today. And unfortunately, they have complete control of the Democrat Party and Joe Biden, I think, is afraid to stand up to them. That's why he's talking to Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and Iran, for goodness sake.

Ooof, Dementia Man's handlers are in a bind now.
This + their cutting domestic production could mean $300/barrel $10/gallon gas going into spring break then summer.

Every GOP Senator and Congressman should be standing up to Joe and demanding we return to energy independence -- no Arab oil, no Russian oil, etc.

Cruz has introduced a bill to return to energy independence .... meanwhile most everyone is sitting with their thumbs up their booties!
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

Tw*tter thread from FOX WH correspondent Jacqui Heinrich:

🚨NEW, thread: Biden stalled bipartisan bill to ban Russian oil.
A source close to the process tells me that the House Ways and Means Committee worked all weekend in a bipartisan manner to develop a bill to ban all Russian oil imports...

They believe this is because the WH did not want to appear that they had been boxed in by Congress on this issue  – but it’s a snapshot of the friction between the WH and House Dems beneath the surface.

Members from both parties expressed frustration that they spent the whole weekend working in a bipartisan fashion only to get rolled by the WH.

**and as I type this, Reuters reports a WH announcement to ban Russian oil is imminent.

@HouseGOP

Instead of begging adversaries for oil, President Biden should:

⛽End the federal freeze on all new oil & gas projects
⛽Fast-track pending LNG export permits
⛽Expedite approval of all pipeline & energy development
⛽Stop the regulatory assault on U.S. energy development

There's still some question whether Europe is part of this.

Does not matter when you are conducting a moral crusade.  Both parties are responsible for what is coming.  Republicans know the dems are too stupid to increase production, but they went along with this anyway.

EU pledges to cut Russian gas imports by two-thirds before the end of the year
CNBC, Mar 8, 2022

The European Union on Tuesday presented a new plan to reduce its dependency on Russian energy, amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, sky-high prices and a potential embargo of Russian crude.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, wants to cease its buying of fossil fuels from Russia before 2030. And it has now presented a new pledge to reduce its purchases of Russian gas by two-thirds before the end of the year.
