Rubio says he's not attending State of the Union address

ORLANDO, Fla. —

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida said he plans to not attend President Joe Biden's State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

Rubio said he will sit it out rather than participate in what he calls COVID-19 “theater,” even as he is involved in monitoring the war in Ukraine.

Masks will no longer be required, removing one source of friction for those lawmakers who had flouted the guidelines and risked being booted from the session for failing to comply — though COVID-19 tests and social distancing measures will still be required.

“I’m just not taking any more COVID tests unless I’m sick,” Rubio said Monday.

Democrats were quick to condemn the decision.

"I think it shows a great disrespect toward the fundamental basic principles of our government," Wes Hodge, Orange County Democratic Party Chair said. "On a day in which he otherwise would not be making headlines, he's trying to find a way to get his name out there, and this is about the only way he can do it."

However, Republicans were quick to defend Rubio.

"If someone doesn't want to go to the State of the Union, it's a free country, still, until Joe Biden changes that for all of us. So if Senator Rubio doesn't want to go I support his decision because he's a free American," Charles Hart, Orange County Republican Party Chair said.

Rubio complained about the COVID-19 requirements during the Conservative Political Action Conference last week in Orlando.................
