Cargo Ship Full of Porsches and VWs Is On Fire and Adrift in the Atlantic
The Felicity Ace’s crew has been rescued, but the fate of the vehicles on board is unknown.
By Lewin Day February 16, 2022

The Portugese Navy has confirmed this morning that one of its patrol boats came to the aid of the Felicity Ace, a car carrier transiting the Atlantic Ocean, as reported by the Washington Post. The vessel transmitted a distress signal after fire broke out in one of the cargo decks, with the ship announced as "not under command" shortly afterwards. Thankfully, the 22 crew on board have been reported as successfully evacuated from the ship.

The Felicity Ace had departed from the port in Emden, Germany on February 10, believed to be carrying vehicles from Porsche and other Volkswagen Auto Group brands, among others. The ship was originally expected to arrive at Davisville, Rhode Island on the morning of February 23.

After transmitting the distress signal on Wednesday morning, the Panama-flagged ship was quickly reached by the Portugese Navy patrol boat as well as four merchant ships in the area. According to Naftika Chronika, the crew of the Felicity Ace left the ship on a lifeboat and were picked up by Resilient Warrior, a tanker operated by Greek company Polembros Shipping Limited. Reportedly, 11 of the crew have so far have been picked up from the Resilient Warrior by a Portugese Navy helicopter. Efforts to bring the situation under control are ongoing according to reports from the scene.

The Felicity Ace was built in 2005, measuring 656 feet long and 104 feet wide, with a carrying capacity of 17,738 tons. Fully loaded, the ship could carry nearly 4,000 vehicles. No details are currently available as to the cause of the fire, other than that it broke out in the ship's cargo hold. The ship can be seen smoking in the distance in photos taken from the Resilient Warrior, as shared by Naftika Chronika.

So technically the ship is adrift with no one on board?

If so, anyone can go claim it or "salvage" its cargo.

In this image posted on the Portuguese navy's website, the Felicity Ace is
shown burning on Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean about 90 nautical miles
southwest of the island of Faial in the Azores.

A ship carrying cars from Germany to the United States caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, forcing the crew's 22 members to abandon the vessel and leave it burning and adrift.

The nearly 650-foot-long ship Felicity Ace is capable of carrying 4,000 cars and was loaded with Porsches and Volkswagens.

The Portuguese navy rescued all 22 members of the crew from the ship, which was scheduled to arrive in Davisville, R.I., on Wednesday. The crew was taken by helicopter to Faial island in the Azores, The Associated Press reported. None of the crew members were hurt.

My guess is that with so much flammable material stored below decks, including gas, oil, and rubber, that the fire is impossible to put out unless there is some way to completely shut off the oxygen below decks.

Have the Gaia worshipers declared it an eco disaster yet and demanded that everyone stop using cars? Where is their savior St. Greta?

I wonder if they're goingto tow it to shore.   :pondering:

Quote
The batteries of an unknown number of electric vehicles have caught fire aboard the ship, captain Joao Mendes Cabecas of the port of Hortas, which is the nearest port to the ship’s location, told Reuters. It’s unclear at this time whether the batteries are what sparked the fire. Experts in putting out battery fires will be needed to extinguish the blaze.

I am sure insurance companies are paying attention after this.... I can see a rise in the cost of imported electric cars.

Massive cargo ship carrying cars sinks in mid-Atlantic
By The Associated Press - 03/01/22 02:49 PM EST

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A large cargo vessel carrying cars from Germany to the United States sank Tuesday in the mid-Atlantic, 13 days after a fire broke out on board, the ship’s manager and the Portuguese navy said.

The Felicity Ace sank about 400 kilometers (250 miles) off Portugal’s Azores Islands as it was being towed, MOL Ship Management in Singapore said in a statement. A salvage team had put out the fire.

The 200-meter-long (650-foot-long) vessel listed to starboard before going under, the ship’s manager said.

The Portuguese navy confirmed the sinking, saying it occurred outside Portuguese waters. A Portuguese Air Force helicopter evacuated the 22 crew members when the fire first broke out, setting the ship adrift.

Ocean-going tugboats with firefighting equipment had been hosing down the ship’s hull to cool it.

It wasn't clear how many cars were onboard the ship, but vessels of the Felicity Ace's size can carry at least 4,000 vehicles.

"I wonder how deep it is now."

Unless it's in water shallow enough to be a hazard to navigation, it's probably down far enough so that there's nothing worth salvaging.
