Ukraine requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss ways to guarantee its security and de-escalate the crisis with Russia. The request comes as President Vladimir Putin of Russia weighs recognizing two breakaway regions of Ukraine.

Kremlin confirms Putin to recognize independence of Ukraine breakaway regions

The Kremlin, in a statement, said Russian President Vladimir Putin in the "near future" will recognize the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic regions in eastern Ukraine.

"Today, the leadership of the DPR and LPR received appeals to recognize their sovereignty in connection with the military aggression of the Ukrainian authorities, massive shelling of the territory of Donbas, as a result of which the civilian population suffers," the Kremlin statement read, repeating claims of military aggression that Ukraine has repeatedly denied and disputed.

"With all this in mind, the President of Russia said that he intended to sign a corresponding decree in the near future," the statement read, adding that the "President of France and the Federal Chancellor of Germany expressed their disappointment with this development."

Vladimir Putin has declared he recognises two separatist regions in Ukraine as independent.

The Russian president made the announcement during a live TV address which lasted around an hour.

It comes after requests by the leaders of Russian-backed Luhansk and Donetsk - which broke away from Kyiv's control in 2014.

Recognition by the president of their independence could provide a pretext for Russian troops to cross the border into those areas.

Expect both to work together to carve out their interests in the Levant and E. Mediterranean putting them on a collision course with Turkey

I think he's setting the predicate to be invited in.  Ukraine is now on the hotseat.  Either they accede to the independence of these provinces, in which case it is completely a peaceful entry by Russian forces, or else they start a fight over the independence of these provinces, at which point Putins LGMs create a couple of humanitarian "disasters" and Russia gets invited in as part of a peacekeeping force.

Either way, Putin is invited in, he doesn't invade.

Sanctions for what?  Recognizing two break-away provinces?  I'm not sure that formal diplomatic recognition, without more, will convince anyone other that Bidet to impose sanctions, and maybe not even him.
