President Biden will give an update on the situation in Russia and Ukraine on Friday, after warning that Russian could invade Ukraine in the next several days.
“In the afternoon, the President will give an update on our continued efforts to pursue deterrence and diplomacy, and Russia’s buildup of military troops on the border of Ukraine,” the White House announced.
Remarks are scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern at the White House.
Right before his remarks, Biden will speak to NATO allies about Russia’s buildup of military troops on the border of Ukraine and efforts toward diplomacy. The call is the latest in weeks of diplomatic engagements between Biden administration officials and European allies about Russia-Ukraine tensions.
Vice President Harris is in Germany on Friday for the Munich Security Conference and met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the sidelines, during which she warned Russia would face “severe consequences” if it invades Ukraine.
Michael Carpenter, the U.S. envoy to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, said Friday that the OSCE has found evidence that 169,000 to 190,000 Russian troops are now at the border, compared to the around 100,000 thought to be in the region on Jan. 30.
