A group of Texas Republican lawmakers, led by Representative Chip Roy, are threatening a government shutdown and are calling on GOP leadership to withhold support for a bill that allows COVID-19 vaccine mandates to remain in place.

Cruz also signed a separate letter led by Utah Senator Michael Lee that demands a vote on an amendment to strip funding from the mandates. The letter states, "these COVID-19 vaccine mandates amount to a serious abuse of both federal power and executive
authority."

According to the Houston Chronicle's reporting, it's unlikely Roy or Cruz will gain more support from Republicans. The publication reported Texas Senator John Cornyn has said he doesn't believe shutdowns ever work and that pushing one for a short-term spending bill makes no sense as Biden's mandates are in court anyway.
