Jobless claims drop as omicron threat recedes
by Zachary Halaschak, Economics Reporter |

The number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell 23,000 last week to 238,000, less than expected.

The numbers reported Thursday morning by the Labor Department are a good sign for job growth. Weekly jobless claims are seen as a proxy for layoffs and have been watched closely in recent weeks for indications about how the omicron variant of COVID-19 has been affecting the labor market.

"Some welcome news on the job market: New seasonally adjusted unemployment claims posted a second straight weekly decline, falling more than expected," said Mark Hamrick, Bankrate's senior economic analyst. "If we continue to see more encouraging signs with COVID, it would be reasonable to expect the economic recovery will gather momentum again."

Biden got some good news today with the unexpectedly good unemployment numbers. But the truth be known, a lot of this recovery was due to red state giving the finger to Biden's vax and shutdown garbage.  Too bad this data can't be parsed by that criteria.

Of course Peo Joe won't take credit for it.   :thud:

On the flip side of this coin, "experts" expected 200K new jobs last month, but came up a half Million short with a 301K net of lost jobs.  There was nothing good about this week's job numbers.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.
