The move strengthens Russia and Turkey’s stranglehold on Europe’s energy supply

The Biden White House has withdrawn U.S. support from a pipeline project designed to deliver Israeli natural gas to Europe, reversing a decision taken by President Donald Trump’s administration.

The 1,180-mile undersea pipeline project from Israel to southern Europe, set to be completed by 2025, will ease Europe’s dependence on Russia and Turkey. These two countries have a stranglehold on the continent’s energy supply.

“The United States is no longer supporting the construction of EastMed gas pipeline project as Washington’s interest is now switching to renewable energy sources, according to a State Department statement,” the Euractiv, a Brussels based news website, reported recently.

By rescinding the U.S. backing for the Israel-Europe pipeline, the Biden administration is bowing down to the pressure from Turkey’s Erdogan regime, which has been angered for being left out of the lucrative energy project. “Several Greek media reported that Joe Biden’s move politically winks at Turkey, who since the beginning has opposed the EastMed deal as it was bypassing it,” the European news outlet noted.

Joe Biden has withdrawn U.S. support for a pipeline project designed to deliver Israeli natural gas to Europe. Biden thereby reverses a decision made by the Trump administration.

The Biden administration tried to justify the reversal of U.S. policy on the basis of its interest in “renewable energy.” But the obvious effect of the decision is to strengthen the stranglehold Russia has on Europe’s energy supply.

In this regard, it’s worth noting, as we often have, that Biden supports the Nord Stream 2 pipeline system that stretches from the Baltic Sea to Germany. David Harsanyi reminds us that Biden waived sanctions on companies behind the project, including one run by Putin ally and former Stasi agent Matthias Warnig. No focus on renewable energy when it comes to defying Putin’s interests.

This Israeli platform was being build in the same yard I was in near Corpus Christi a few years back.  If I were single, working on this would have been my dream job.

That is an impressive structure.

I had seen those type of offshore platforms go up for years when I worked in Corpus during the 70s and 80s, mostly in Ingleside.

How do you know you would not have been working offshore Nigeria or Angola rather than Mediterranean countries?

Yes, that's where I was - Ingleside.  When Leviathan was there, it was already known it was going to the Med.  The rig I was commissioning at the time may have set the record for longest time spent at the yard.  But I ended up sailing out with it into the Gulf, which was pretty cool.

I may be going back to Ingleside to commission another platform in the coming months.  Haven't made up my mind yet whether I want to commit to that schedule.

Have always been impressed with these projects.  Huge expenditures on risky projects.  If you are connected to these, you are a valuable commodity.
