Northern Virginia School Districts Go To War With Youngkin Over Repeal Of Mask Mandates

Three school districts in Virginia plan to defy newly-inaugurated Glenn Youngkin’s repeal of in-school mask mandates, according to announcements from Fairfax County, Arlington, and Alexandria City Public Schools.

Arlington Public Schools (APS) announced Jan. 15, the same day as Youngkin’s inauguration, that the district would defy the Governor’s executive order that repealed in-school mask mandates. APS claims that universal masking reduces the transmission rate of COVID-19, though the district could not point to a specific study that confirms their claims.

“Arlington Public Schools will continue to require all staff and students to wear masks inside on school grounds and on buses, as part of our layered approach to safety,” the district said. “Universal mask use has proven effective in keeping COVID-19 transmission rates low in our schools and ensuring schools remain safe and open.”

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

bullshit.  Does he have data and proof?  Otherwise, he's barking up a very tall tree, given that even the CDC has admitted that, other than N95 masks, the masks that everyone uses do not reduce transmission.

What a bald-faced lie.

Parents need to step up and back the governor giving them the choice.

Youngkin abolish the state mandate, he does not have the authority to run the local jurisdictions, that is the voters job UNLESS the counties are violating the law.

So it's OK for a Democrat governor to order all schools to require masks for all students, but it's not OK for a Republican governor to repeal that order?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Virginia Code

§ 1-240.1. Rights of parents.

A parent has a fundamental right to make decisions concerning the upbringing, education, and care of the parent's child.

Looks like Youngkin has the law on his side.  Let the parents decide on whether their kids wear masks.

Youngkin is citing Commonwealth law.  It is up to each parent to decide.

No surprise.

Teacher's colleges are nothing less than a breeding ground for communism.

I agree. The "pedagogy" they teach could just as well be called Indoctrination 101: How to turn the kiddies into drones. Same as journalism schools, which don't teach how to report the facts of a story, but how to influence opinion.

That's about the size of it.

They already have.

Why do you believe they elected Youngkin in the first place?

These school districts are fighting a losing battle.  They are between the state and the angry parents.

'We're dropping like flies:' Chesterfield & Hanover school boards plan meetings on masks; schools, staff respond to executive opt-out order on masks
    Holly Prestidge 21 hrs ago
School boards, classroom teachers and everyone in between are frantically grappling with how to deal with Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order that takes effect Monday, giving parents a choice on mask usage for their children while in schools.

Specifically, the order allows parents to elect not to have their children wear masks while in school, and does not require parents to provide a reason for their decision.

Further, the order says that a child who has permission from their parent not to wear a mask “should not be required to wear a mask under any policy implemented by a teacher, school, school district, the Department of Education, or any state authority.”

The order does not apply to buses, for which there is a federal order that masks must be worn.

A group of Chesapeake parents filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Youngkin, asking the Supreme Court of Virginia to agree with them that his executive order violates a 2021 state law, which requires schools to adhere to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s COVID-19 guidelines “to the maximum extent practicable.”

Locally, not all school divisions are on board with Youngkin’s order, while some school divisions are still on the fence about what they’ll do. ...
Richmond Times Dispatch

This is pathetic. Parents, if you want your children to wear masks, give them masks. Why should you care whether anyone else is wearing them - or is it that you know deep down they're worthless, no matter how many people are wearing them?
