Republicans Notch Big Win As Court Upholds North Carolina’s New Congressional Map

A North Carolina court Tuesday upheld the state’s new congressional and state legislative lines, rejecting claims from Democratic groups that it was an unfair gerrymander giving Republicans in the state a big win.

While the case may be appealed, the decision as it stands now could impact the 2022 midterm elections, where Republicans are seeking to reverse Democrats’ narrow House majority. North Carolina is gaining a 14th seat, and the new congressional lines could give Republicans an 11-3 advantage, up from the 8-5 split now.

The Democrats’ lawyers argued during last week’s trial that the map chosen was an extreme outlier that Republicans picked solely for political gain. Republicans, however, said that the new lines were drawn legally and that the court was incapable of determining whether it was too partisan to stand. ............

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
The only one I can see that may be construed as gerrymandered is the 12th. The others are pretty normal configurations.
The Republic is lost.

That alone is a five vote swing which is over half of what is needed to regain control.

Will probably end up in front of the State SC.  Chief Justice is R but the court overall is 4-3 D.

You are probably correct and Roberts is a liberal.

Thanks.  Happy to be here.  I was referring to the State Supreme Court and not the US.  Chief Justice is Paul Martin Newby.

Arizona corrected the 2010 mistake, and our Congressional delegation will likely be 5-4 or 6-3 R.  It's been majority D for a number of years.  The 2011 map was the first drawn by an Independent Redistricting Commission, and was hijacked when the "independent" member of the commission was actually a Democrat activist registered as an Independent.

This year's was much better, and the Dems are pissed.  The GOP had wised up and got our members to testify en mass at the various hearings, far outnumbering the witnesses from the Rats.  Ordinary people got involved, and it made the difference.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.

Knowing how stupid and petty Georgia Republicans are, I wouldn't be surprised if Democrats gained seats.  Currently, two of the three closest split districts have Republican majorities, but have Democrat Reps.  Instead of working to win both of those districts, the State House Speaker ceded one to the Democrats to make the other even more Republican.

If the Republicans quit their petty BS and instead decided they wanted to win elections, they could pick up all three and get rid of Sanford Bishop.  That would switch from an 8-6 split to an 11-3 split, a 6-seat gain.  So that and North Carolina alone would win back the House.  Unfortunately, the Georgia GOP doesn't give a damn about any of that.
