Wash Post Falsely Reports Hurricane Struck Upstate Vermont, Niagara Falls Last Year

The Washington Post is making preposterous claims in a newly published article claiming more than 40 percent of Americans were “hit” by climate disasters in 2021. Among the preposterous claims, the Post claims a hurricane hit upstate Vermont and Buffalo, New York. No such hurricane struck either of the inland regions.

In its January 5 article, titled “More than 40 percent of Americans live in counties hit by climate disasters in 2021,” the Post presents a map of the United States including border lines shown for all counties in the country. Then, the Post adds a color to each county allegedly “hit” by a climate disaster in 2021.

The Post’s analysis is egregiously biased and flawed. For example, the Post justifies claiming every county in California was hit by a “climate disaster” because of wildfires. However, NASA satellites have measured a dramatic decline in the amount of land burned globally due to wildfires. National data show an even larger long-term decline in U.S. wildfires. Also, California data show a long-term decline in California wildfires. Of course, some wildfires will always occur, but blaming global warming or “climate change” for the smaller number of California wildfires that still occur as the Earth modestly warms is nonsensical.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
WaPo might as well lie about the weather, they seem to be truth challenged on  most other fronts as well.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I hope Bernie Sanders' island lair was't damaged.

Someone forgot to tell Vermont that they were hit with the Hurricane Ida "climate disater".

'Neighbors helping neighbors': Vermont utility workers help after Ida causes NYC flooding
Elizabeth Murray
Burlington Free Press

Hurricane Ida had little impact on Vermont, so the state's largest utility is sending electrical workers to help neighbors to the south recover from the storm. ...

... There were no reports of flooding or damage in Vermont due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida, according to John Goff, a lead forecaster at the National Weather Service in Burlington. Damage was focused mainly in Connecticut and New York. Southern Vermont received only up to 1 to 2 inches of rain total. ...

I was going to say that the WaPo article was sloppy journalism, but that would be too generous.  I'd catergorize it as fantasic hyperbolic climate fear porn.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/01/05/climate-disasters-2021-fires/

More than 40 percent of Americans live in counties hit by climate disasters in 2021

As climate-fueled extreme weather intensified last year, more than 80 percent of Americans experienced a heat wave. The impacts of fires and severe storms also spread.

2021 ended as it began: with disaster. Twelve months after an atmospheric river deluged California, triggering mudslides in burned landscapes and leaving a half-million people without power, a late-season wildfire destroyed hundreds of homes in the suburbs of Denver. In between, Americans suffered blistering heat waves, merciless droughts and monstrous hurricanes. People collapsed in farm fields and drowned in basement apartments; entire communities were obliterated by surging seas and encroaching flames. ...

I may just be a deplorable, but it is not unusual for the remnants of North Atlantic hurricanes to track over the Hudson River or Connecticut River valleys.

List of New York hurricanes

... October 1, 1874: New York City and the Hudson Valley receives rainfall after a minimal tropical storm tracked over Eastern New York. ...

When did Global Climate Change start?  Was Al Gore even a glimmer in his father's eye on October 1, 1874?

I suppose a hurricane in Niagara is possible if it made it north to the St. Lawrence Seaway, without dissipating from the colder water, then making a sharp left turn of about 120 degrees, then followed the Seaway to Niagara.  Maybe there's enough water in the seaway to keep the Hurricane alive.

That's either bad reporting or really bad geography.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
