Onslow Marine Corps legend -- a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war -- dies at 77

A father figure, a mentor and a best friend.

That’s how U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Matt Deffenbaugh described his late father-in-law Guy L. Hunter Jr., 77, of Topsail Island, who died peacefully at home on Dec. 16 with his wife by his side.

A Vietnam veteran and former Iraqi prisoner of war, Hunter will be remembered for more than his military service – he was a family man and a known contributor to the Onslow County veteran community.
'A true patriot'

When asked what Hunter is most known for, his son-in-law said it depends who you talk to.

“If you talked to those who served with him, they’ll tell you that they never met somebody that was more proficient at their job than him,” Deffenbaugh said. “If you talk to the veterans community (and organizations), it would be his generosity, whether it was giving up his time or speaking at different events to help, particularly the Rolling Thunder, raise awareness for POWs and specifically those Missing in Action from Vietnam that never came home.”
