Pfizer partner warns triple-vaccinated still likely to transmit COVID variant. "It is obvious we are far from 95% effectiveness that we obtained against the initial virus," CEO says.

COVID-19 vaccines will be insufficient to combat the Omicron variant, according to the head of the German company that produced the mRNA vaccine with Pfizer.

"We must be aware that even triple-vaccinated are likely to transmit the disease," BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin told the French newspaper Le Monde in an interview published this week. "It is obvious we are far from 95% effectiveness that we obtained against the initial virus."

Sahin, a German immunologist, added the vaccine will become less effective against Omicron with time but that it's too early to make any concrete forecasts.

"There will be a loss of effectiveness against Omicron over time. It's very likely, but it's still to be measured how quickly," he said. "I will not base predictions on preliminary laboratory data but on real-life data, which is much more appropriate."

Yes, but omicron is hardly the potentially lethal antagonist the original virus was reputed to be; accordingly, it is now time for all but the seriously immunocompromised to let natural immunity - y'know, that mechanism that we have evolved over millenia - take its course.

The only truly effective counter to covid-19, in all its variants, is natural immunity - the data has demonstrated that pervasively.

The shots were developed against Wuhan Classic, and to only attack the spike protein.

The virus doesn't have to change - add, delete, recombine - much to evade immunity.

It's the equivalent of setting up a web site that allows anyone, but Samuel, to login with just an ID, and no password.  Samuel may not be able to get through, but Sam and Sammy can.

They need to fully sequence all existing variants, and develop mRNA immunotherapies that recognize and react to more than just the spike protein in the virus.

The current regimen was a desperate emergency Hail Mary pass with new immunotherapies developed with new technologies against a new virus.

They were hoping for a one-and-done vaccine, but it looks like this will be more like the annual flu shot that varies from flu season to flu season based upon modeling newly circulating strains of flu virus.

The key metrics to evaluate the reduced efficacy are deaths, ICU beds, and hospitalizations.  At this point it has been demonstrated that "fully vaccinated" and "boosted" individuals can acquire and spread Covid-19/SARS2.

The hopium felt good while it lasted for those few weeks in June/July.
