Reports flood in over 'loud boom' heard in central Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — UPDATE:

Local Officials are aware of the "boom" heard across multiple counties in Central Illinois and are working to determine the cause. So far no damage or injuries have been reported. The likely causes are an atmospheric event such as a meteorite or sonic boom from jets.

We are still working to get confirmation and will provide updates as soon as we get more information.

Newschannel 20 getting reports from viewers all of the city about a loud boom that happened shortly before noon on Tuesday that could be heard throughout the area.

Scott Air Force Base told us they don't have any knowledge of jets breaking the sound barrier.

The Springfield Police Department and the Springfield Fire Department said they do not know the cause of the boom and they were not called to any scene related to the sound.

We are still working to find out what the sound was and will provide updates as soon as we get more information.

Additionally. the Chatham Police Department said they've been getting reports of the boom from Sangamon County and beyond.

The department is asking people to stop calling to report the sound because it ties up emergency calls.

Twitter and Facebook users in central Illinois are tweeting about an apparent explosion, but so far, no one knows what happened. One Facebook user said the blast rattled her house in Chatham, Illinois, and others felt it downtown and by the mall. Other cities mentioned in the post were Decatur, Jacksonville and Collinsville.

Pawnee Police Department released the following statement after the Illinois explosion:

“We are aware of the loud boom that occurred a few minutes ago. We do not know what the source is at this time. It is being reported all over Central Illinois. Please avoid calling emergency services Sangamon County Central Dispatch System / 9-1-1 or our department phone for general inquiries into this as it ties up the phone lines for emergency/priority calls. Thank you and be safe. UPDATE: Possible sonic boom being reported. Unconfirmed at the moment.”

A little follow-up research indicates that the consensus seems to be it was a sonic boom from an F-15.

Sonic booms from military fighter jets rattle residents in Illinois and Oregon

Military aircraft creating sonic booms in separate incidents left communities in Illinois and Oregon rattled over the past week. Officials said shaking was felt by many residents, with some fearing an earthquake had struck.

On Tuesday, an F-15 fighter jet traveling over central Illinois created a sonic boom that rattled the region, prompting concerned residents to flood local police stations with calls about the noise, a state agency said. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency said in a statement that the department was alerted about 11:20 a.m. CST about "a large noise and shaking felt by many residents" across central Illinois.

The state agency said it began investigating with federal, state and local officials and found that the sound was a sonic boom from a military fighter jet.

"It was determined that an F-15 fighter jet in the airspace above central Illinois course corrected creating a sonic boom. When the aircraft broke the sound barrier, the pressure wave created an audible noise and minor shaking in the region," the state agency said in a statement.

There have been no reports of damage caused by the noise, it added.

The sonic boom in Illinois follows a similar incident in Oregon last week. Military officials said a sonic boom that caused widespread concern on the Oregon coast that an earthquake had happened was caused by an aircraft that "inadvertently went supersonic."
