California Democrats Change Their Stance on Defund Police, Lawlessness: ‘Reign of Criminals’ Must End

Penny Starr 16 Dec 2021

From the mayor’s office in San Francisco to the governor’s mansion and the U.S. House of Representatives, California Democrats in recent days have said the crime surge in the state must be stopped and police are needed to make that happen.

“It’s time that the reign of criminals who are destroying our city, it is time for it to come to an end,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said on Tuesday when announcing new public safety measures. “And it comes to an end when we take the steps to be more aggressive with law enforcement … and less tolerant of all the bullshit that has destroyed our city.”

“It’s absolutely outrageous, obviously it cannot continue,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on Wednesday about the surge of retail thefts in San Francisco. “There is an attitude of lawlessness in our country that springs from I don’t know where … and we cannot have that lawlessness become the norm.”

Nancy, you know damned well where it springs from:  it springs from your party's lawlessness and disregard for safety.  It springs from your party's special treatment of criminals of all stripes.

California Forced to Re-fund the Police, Amid Surging Retail Crimes

Defunding the police has a series of negative consequences, starting with the increase of crime and a rise of people who believe they can break the law with impunity.

It’s also worth noting that the consequences of defunding law enforcement are that much more dangerous when other measures (such as releasing prisoners from incarceration and destroying cash bail) are enacted.

Multiple cities across California are suffering from the rise of retail theft, smash and grab lootings, etc. With all of this going on, leaders in the deeply leftist state have been forced to take action.

It's not so much that private property is being stolen.  It's that retail theft means loss of tax revenue.  It's one thing to steal from Needless Markup, it's another to steal from ... the children.

It also increases the cost of everything sold in California to make up for the losses. The customer pays for all of it one way or another. The best move is to get out of California so you aren't on the hook for paying for all the insanity.

Why Progressives Defend Drug Dealers
And how San Francisco and other cities can shut down open drug markets
Michael Shellenberger
Dec. 21, 2021
Quote
San Francisco’s District Attorney, Public Defender, and a member of the Board of Supervisors are attacking Mayor London Breed’s plan to crack down on crime and open air drug dealing as wrong-headed. D.A. Chesa Boudin said that “75 percent of those booked in jail are addicted or mentally ill” and called for a non-law enforcement-based approach. “Piling more resources into policing and punishment,” said Public Defender Mano Raju, have “never been the solutions to public health crises.” And Supervisor Shamann Walton called for a more “evidence-based” approach.

But the Mayor’s plan is evidence-based. Many addicts require the threat of jail or other forms of coercion to stop breaking the law and get their lives together. The approach to breaking up open drug scenes, treating addiction, and providing psychiatric care is fundamentally the same everywhere. The Department of Justice has even published a handbook for cities to use to break up open drug markets .

Progressives are right to worry about over-incarceration. Addicts and the mentally ill need treatment, not time in jail or prison. Simply arresting addicts and dealers and not helping them overcome their addiction, and find a new way of life, will not solve the problem.

But law enforcement is also necessary for shutting down open drug scenes.  ...
