Russia has been amassing troops near its border with Ukraine since the beginning of the year. Estimates and reports suggest that close to 100,000 Russian soldiers and heavy weaponry are stationed along the border. According to intelligence reports, Russia may invade Ukraine early in the new year.  Kyiv is feeling threatened and is looking to the West for support and security.

How do you think the U.S. should handle the situation?

The Black Sea has always been important to Russian prestige and the Russian Navy.

The British and the Ottoman Turks fought the Crimean War to prevent Russia from accessing the Black Sea.

NATO conducting exercises in the Black Sea must be as provacative to them as Russian-Cuban-Venezuelan naval exercises in the Gulf of Mexico would be to the United States.

Eastern European nations feel the need to join NATO to maintain sovereignty in the face of Russian ambitions.

There's no easy answer or solution.
