Conservatives prepare new push for constitutional convention

BY REID WILSON - 12/08/21 06:00 AM EST

SAN DIEGO — Conservative lawmakers will mount a new push to call a constitutional convention aimed at creating a balanced budget amendment and establishing term limits for members of Congress in an effort to rein in what they see as a runaway federal government.

State legislators meeting at the American Legislative Exchange Council’s policy conference here last week hope to use Article V of the Constitution, which allows state legislatures to call a convention to propose new amendments.

“It’s really the last line of defense that we have. Right now, the federal government’s run away. They’re not going to pull their own power back. They’re not going to restrict themselves. And so this Article V convention is really, in my opinion, is the last option that we have,” said Iowa state Rep. John Wills (R), the state’s House Speaker pro tempore who backs the convention.

At least two-thirds of states must pass a call to force a convention; so far, 15 states have passed the model legislation proposed by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative group that backs free markets and states’ rights.

Bills have passed at least one legislative chamber in another nine states, and bills have been introduced in 17 more states. The 15 states that have passed measures so far all have Republican-controlled legislatures and Republican governors; another nine states totally controlled by the GOP have yet to finalize passage, according to Convention of States Action, a project of the conservative group Citizens for Self-Governance.

Term limits is a good idea. They also need to strip retirement benefits the way they are now with that.

Whoa!  Whoa!  Whoa!

Constitutional Convention?

Balanced budget amendment?

Term limits?

... did some Republicans from the 1990s time travel to 2021?  I thought such Republicans could only be found in museum exhibits, next to the Dodo Bird.

We haven't had a Constitutional Convention for a long time.  It was realized a decade or two ago that a Constitutional Convention, with the democrats having the upper hand, could utterly destroy
America as we know it.  With socialist Communists democrats having the upper hand, now might well be the worst time in America's history to have a Constitutional Convention, where our entire system could be utterly changed, and get a government the horror of all nations.  At this time, the idea couldn't be more scary.

Never going to happen.

Because we give them everything they want as long as it is agreed by all that any State can withdraw from the union at anytime with a simple majority vote in the State's Legislature.

At some point people have to recognize there is no room for compromise with the leftists.

Exactly!!! The time for a Constitutional Convention slipped away awhile ago.  To have one now I don't think would end well at all.

As mentioned above, the time for a "Constitutional convention" has passed.
The existing federal government probably cannot be substantially reformed.

What it IS now time for, is a "New Continental Congress".
To follow in the footsteps and legacy of what the first one did.

@Fishrrman what makes you think that a "New" Continental Congress would succeed in favor of conservatism without the risk of complete liberal take over??

Delegates from each state would need to be named, if I am understanding the procedure correctly?? Who would lead??

In essence revolution??  Or am I jumping the gun here?

I totally agree!

I also agree. We would end up with a woke Constitution where modern monetary theory will be written in

What we need are people who defend the Constitution as it is
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Have a election year coming up and those that are not UNIPARTY members have to work to get elected. All talk and will stay that way until after the mid terms and never to be heard about again as long as their is a Republican Party. Conservatives are not Republicans and not enough conservatives to have this come about. All Talk.

Precisely!  2A is essential.  Why would anyone risk our most essential amendment.   Are people aware that the likes of Soros and the Communist Party already have new constitutions prepared for this event?  No.  Just no!
