Customers all across the world are being affected by an outage at the Amazon Web Services US-East-1 cloud region. Games such as Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, Valorant, Clash of Clans, Destiny 2, and Dead by Daylight, among others, were among those affected, as were Amazon subsidiaries such as IMDb and Ring, among other things.

Websites and backend services for a variety of clients, including the Associated Press, Netflix, Disney+, and Vice Media, among others. The outage had an impact on the information regarding the outage. About five hours after multiple businesses and other organisations began reporting problems with Amazon Web Services, the firm said on its AWS status page that it has “mitigated” the fundamental fault that was the source of the outage.

There is a possibility that the outage has affected the United States Government, according to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. In an email response to questions, the agency said they were collaborating with the company “to understand any potential impacts this outage may have for federal agencies or other partners.”

Ruh-roh.  Sounds like someone figured out how to trash AWS on a wholesale basis.

One of my company's applications was down because of the AWS outage, which coincidentally occurred the same day Biden and Putin had their virtual meeting.

Amazon Says ‘Unexpected Behavior’ Caused Huge Cloud Outage

Yahoo by Spencer Soper and Jack Gillum 12/10/2021

(Bloomberg) -- Amazon.com Inc. said automated processes in its cloud computing business caused cascading outages across the internet this week, affecting everything from Disney amusement parks and Netflix videos to robot vacuums and Adele ticket sales.

In a statement Friday, Amazon said the problem began Dec. 7 when an automated computer program -- designed to make its network more reliable -- ended up causing a “large number” of its systems to unexpectedly behave strangely. That, in turn, created a surge of activity on Amazon’s networks, ultimately preventing users from accessing some of its cloud services.

“Basically, a bad piece of code was executed automatically and it caused a snowball effect,” Forrester analyst Brent Ellis said. The outage persisted “because their internal controls and monitoring systems were taken offline by the storm of traffic caused by the original problem.”

Amazon explained the failure in a highly technical statement posted online. The problems began about 10:30 a.m. New York time on Dec. 7 and lasted several hours before Amazon managed to fix the problem. In the meantime, social media lit up with complaints from consumers angered that their smart home gadgetry and other internet-connected services had suddenly ceased to work.

Makes you wonder about who writes the code for Bezos's space division.
